Overview
The Eighth Floor, known as the Ghosts of Earth, is a memory-reconstruction floor that places crawlers in regions modeled on Earth shortly before the collapse. It is one of the most emotionally important locations in the series because it forces survivors to move through replicas of the world that was stolen from them. The people and animals in these regions appear as intangible ghosts, while objects and environments can remain physically significant. The floor is important because it fuses survival mechanics with grief. Carl is not merely fighting monsters in a themed arena. He is walking through a ghost version of Earth, surrounded by people who do not know they are already dead.
History
The floor begins after the disruption of the Seventh Floor. Crawlers choose or are placed into regions, and parties are divided into squads. Carl's group begins in Cuba, while other allies appear in places such as Iceland, Beijing, Ecuador, and parts of the United States. The floor announcement explains that each region is a limited replica of an Earth location as captured before the collapse. The floor is divided into phases. The first phase traps squads in their starting regions and requires them to fill squad slots before moving forward. Later phases involve key acquisition and region movement. The structure turns Earth geography into a tactical board while preserving the emotional horror of familiar human spaces.
Design and Function
The Ghosts of Earth uses memory as terrain. Buildings, roads, vehicles, food, tools, and objects may be tangible or functionally useful, while biological entities continue their recorded routines as ghosts. The rules create surreal hazards: a car may crash if blocked, a ghost may pass through a crawler, and ordinary supplies may become resources in dungeon combat. The floor also introduces squad construction as a major mechanic. Crawlers must decide whom to include, trust, or risk being assigned randomly. The location therefore transforms social choice into a survival requirement.
Role in the Series
The Eighth Floor is a major emotional test for Carl. It confronts him with Earth not as a memory in his head, but as an explorable wound. The floor also develops Donut's understanding of what was lost, even though her own relationship to Earth is filtered through her life as a show cat and newly sapient crawler. Strategically, the floor prepares survivors for the Ninth Floor. It arms groups, reshuffles alliances, and forces choices that will matter in Faction Wars. Emotionally, it reminds the characters what the war is actually about. The floor also clarifies why later conflicts cannot be treated as ordinary game progression. The crawl has already destroyed Earth, but the Ghosts of Earth makes that destruction visible at street level. Every tactical decision on the floor carries the weight of homes, families, cities, and routines that the dungeon converted into scenery.
