Chapter 34 of The Gate of the Feral Gods follows Carl and Princess Donut through the final hours of the Fifth Floor. A Gate opening is scheduled near Bubble 543's stairwell, but the portal that matters is hidden in the Water Quadrant. While a demon drawn to Samantha threatens the surface, Maggie My approaches in Chris Andrews's body to stop the apparent Gate. Carl's preparations allow him to free Chris and preserve the real artifact. Katia Grim then opens a portal into Larracos, damaging the Ninth Floor's markets and military preparations before the group descends toward the hunters on the Sixth Floor.
Porthus's last note and the remaining time
The chapter opens with a note by Porthus, author of the second edition of the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook. He doubts that the additions he has made will give future crawlers enough help, and he has accepted a hundred seasons of service outside the dungeon. He promises to continue opposing those responsible for the crawl if he survives that service. The entry precedes Carl's immediate struggle with the floor's collapse timer, placing his coming attack beside an older crawler's unfinished resistance.
Five hours and thirty minutes remain when Carl buries what appears to be the Gate's winding box in the sand, roughly ten meters from a stairwell. A genuine Gate countdown would end if the box moved more than five feet after being set. Carl makes the location conspicuous enough to defend and leaves the box there with two watches visible, inviting an enemy who knows the rule to disrupt it. Langley and his archers are the last other crawlers with Carl and Donut on the surface. After speaking with Carl about possible allies on the next floor, they descend, leaving Carl, Donut, Mongo, and Juice Box at the site.
Juice Box watches the dromedarians rebuild Hump Town even though the floor will soon cease to exist. She presses Carl to honor their agreement to try to carry her people onward. At the same time, Katia and Tran train in the Water Quadrant, the only quadrant of their bubble that still contains mobs. Katia calculates that the apparent Gate will open only twenty-three minutes before collapse. A portal normally remains open for twenty minutes unless all three Gate pieces pass through it, so the announced schedule leaves almost no room for delay.
The announced strike and the hidden destination
Carl has told the others a particular version of his Ninth Floor plan. Ghazi's papers describe several outcomes for moving Gate components through a portal. One arrangement could make the portal safe but would effectively ruin the artifact. Another, involving a watch left at the opening and another taken through, would summon a feral god on both sides. Carl openly proposes sending Juice Box through with the Gate to call a god into the Skull Empire's Ninth Floor position. He has identified that position through Prince Stalwart's earlier recording and the coordinates recovered with Ghazi's papers. Several factions have tried to stop this plan because their fortifications and armies are vulnerable to such an incursion.
Juice Box objects that the proposed attack would kill people like her. Louis has helped her understand that she is an NPC, and she rejects the idea that deaths among such people are merely a blow against their operators. She agrees only after Donut speaks with her and Carl promises to try to move her surviving people down future floors. Her consent is tied to that promise, not to an uncomplicated enthusiasm for the advertised strike. The chapter later reveals that Carl and Katia have already prepared a different target and a different use for the Gate.
Zev reports a last-minute legal challenge by the Skull Empire. The Valtay Corporation helps Borant defeat it by arguing that Carl's ownership of stock in a Skull Empire company changes the court in which the suit belongs. Zev also passes on Borant's warning that it will not tolerate future actions against sponsors on this scale, even while its leadership approves the publicly understood plan. Carl reads the approval as an expression of Borant's financial interest in the damage other sponsors may suffer. Neither the lawsuit nor Borant's message reveals the portal's actual placement.
Slit and Samantha
The immediate danger develops apart from Maggie's approach. A fight between powerful beings in the space between bubbles breaks open another enclosure. Gideon warns Carl that a released creature carrying an enormous whip appears to be headed toward him. The pursuer calls for Samantha, the head inhabited by Psamathe. Carl soon recognizes the creature as a demon rather than the feral god he initially feared. The system identifies her as Slit, a level-200 feral minor demon who has spent ages in the Nothing.
Slit's weapon is a huge electrified chain. Its strike cuts into the desert and the temple below the bowl where Carl has placed the apparent Gate. Juice Box changes into a turtle and braces the box so it cannot be shifted by the impact, although a wider collapse of the site would still endanger it. Samantha insults Slit and claims she can fight her; Slit remains intent on reaching her. The confrontation threatens both Carl's position and the nearby stairwell at a moment when abandoning the plan would leave little time to recover.
Carl opens an emergency platinum sponsor box from the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network. It contains an extension for his xistera designed to throw a head, specifically fitting Samantha's doll head. Carl brings Samantha out of his personal space despite Mordecai's warning that her presence outside can summon another deity. He launches her far into the distance, and Slit leaves the stairwell area in pursuit. A many-armed deity then appears, seizes Slit, and tears her apart. Samantha subsequently identifies the deity as her mother. Carl concludes that the sponsor's device was probably intended for a later occasion and was sent early to save them; that timing is his interpretation, while the box's arrival and the resulting diversion are shown directly.
Samantha's explanation also gives the pursuit a personal cause. Slit believed Samantha had slept with the ruler to whom Slit was attached. Samantha says she had been speaking about a different ruler and deliberately aggravated the misunderstanding. She warns that other members of the same demon harem remain in the Nothing. Slit's death therefore removes this attack without settling the wider danger connected to Samantha's enemies or to taking her outside.
Maggie's attempt on the decoy
Safe rooms close when one hour remains. Juice Box, using a form able to detect creatures concealed in sand, has already sensed Maggie and Chris moving beneath the surface. Chris's rock body can burrow and hide, while Maggie, a Scree parasite lodged in his brain, controls him. Carl calls to Maggie, trying to draw her out. She knows he has a potion associated with Chris's lava-rock body, but Carl uses the conversation to explain the Phase Lava Rock potion and keep her attention on him as she creeps toward the box.
Maggie says she has been told that her surviving daughter will be brought back and made into a monster unless she stops Carl. She also describes a goatlike liaison who approached her in a rest area after Frank's death. Her claim explains why she continues the attack even after her anger at Carl has diminished; the chapter does not establish that the threat to her daughter would actually be carried out. Maggie appears to be prevented from saying more. Carl realizes that she means to move the box beyond the Gate's five-foot tolerance, not simply to strike him.
With roughly ten minutes left on the apparent countdown, Chris bursts from the sand, lifts the box, and throws it. The box comes apart and its watches scatter. Carl has timed his Phase Lava Rock potion so Chris's body cannot block him. He reaches into Chris's head and pulls Maggie's worm body free while leaving Chris alive. Maggie bites his hand and burrows into his own body. Carl waits for the phase effect to expire, then drinks a double-healing potion before she reaches his brain. The treatment forces her through his neck and leaves him bleeding and incapacitated. Mongo catches and eats the weakened worm.
Donut heals Carl and Chris. Carl tells Imani that Chris is safe and intends to reunite them on the next floor. Chris's first words after recovery turn to Brandon, his brother, whose death cannot be undone by removing Maggie. Carl answers by recalling that Brandon died saving others. Donut recovers Maggie's possessions, and Carl directs that they be given to Chris. The encounter ends Maggie's control of his body, but Chris emerges from it grieving and disoriented.
The real Gate opens into Larracos
The scattered watch exposes the surface box as a decoy. Carl had made the false watches earlier; Katia had fabricated a winding box in pieces and assembled it in her inventory. During their farewell embrace at the Desperado Club, she and Carl exchanged the real and false components. Their allies therefore saw a plausible countdown near the stairwell while Katia prepared the real opening underwater. The substitution also let Maggie's sponsors watch their agent disrupt the wrong device.
Carl now tells Juice Box that the portal is about to open from the Water Quadrant. He has abandoned the announced scheme to summon a feral god on the Ninth Floor and intends to keep the Gate intact. He asks her to fly to the water, pass through to Larracos, remain hidden, and tell its inhabitants what she has learned about their existence. Juice Box can cross as an NPC while Carl and the others still have to descend by stairwell. His goal is for the survivors to understand their status before the crawlers eventually reach them. Juice Box renews her demand that he protect her people. She also asks him to keep Louis safe, revealing that she loves him and plans to marry him, then changes form and leaves for the portal.
Katia reports that the Gate has opened inside Larracos's faction market. Timed charges and a chum bomb were placed near the underwater opening. The current draws bombs, water, sharks, and pain-amplifier jellies through the portal. Katia has anchored herself to the temple wall against that pull and plans to use the nearby Subterranean stairwell. Carl waits for confirmation that she has escaped before bringing Chris into his party for the descent. He believes the incoming water will flood much of the city's lower area; the chapter gives his projection and Zev's alarm, not a complete post-attack survey of every district.
Zev explains why the market attack matters beyond the immediate destruction. The workers and merchants who die cannot simply be replaced after a level has been created, although mobs can be added. Flooded markets would interrupt the purchase of food and magical equipment for faction armies. Damage to the entrance bar could also cut sponsors off from the Desperado Club's gambling and trade. Zev says some factions had hidden armies in the city to protect them from the god Carl publicly threatened to summon. The concealed portal instead puts those forces in danger. She speaks of thousands or tens of thousands killed, while Carl privately acknowledges that innocent NPCs have died without claiming an exact count.
Carl knows the victims are people, and the attack troubles him even as he defends it to himself as an act of war. He distinguishes the city's workers from former crawlers under contract, such as Mordecai, and reasons that damaging the sponsors' supply lines may spare other people later. His own unease remains visible; the chapter does not present the losses as a costless victory. He also suspects Zev's outrage conceals useful information she is deliberately giving him, but that reading is Carl's inference rather than an openly confirmed agreement between them.
Descent and the challenge to the hunters
Katia reaches the stairwell separately. Carl adds Chris to his party, and Donut and Mongo accompany them toward their own exit. Carl expects the attack on Larracos to affect the Sixth Floor immediately: factions have lost merchants who could buy equipment from crawlers for their Ninth Floor forces, and access to another market may be impaired. He speculates that sponsors may send their own people among the hunters to obtain gear directly. The chapter leaves that forecast open, but Carl welcomes the possibility of drawing more of those enemies within reach.
At the stairwell, Carl's ranking places him first among the remaining crawlers. He shows the Ring of Divine Suffering, an item hunters covet, and turns the public attention on himself. Rather than surrender the ring or hide from the bounty on his head, he invites the Sixth Floor hunters to come after him and promises to kill every one who enters the floor. Chris has already passed through the stairwell when Carl, Donut, and Mongo follow. The chapter closes with Maggie dead, Chris freed, the real Gate retained, Juice Box sent to Larracos, and Carl openly committing himself to a counter-hunt on the next floor.
