The end of Faction Wars leaves Carl and Princess Donut with a formal victory, but it does not restore the conditions that existed before the ninth floor. Larracos and its people have been moved into another part of the dungeon, Katia has left the crawl, and the surviving crawlers must enter the tenth floor while the ninth is destroyed. Beyond the battlefield, former crawlers and their allies begin acting against the powers that ran the war. The dungeon's AI and other forces released during the fighting create dangers that reach far beyond the next floor. The aftermath is therefore both a change in the crawlers' immediate circumstances and a widening conflict over who controls the Earth system.
A victory without the expected final battle
The Princess Posse's victory depends on the departure of its ally, Team Retribution. The rules permit only one Faction Wars winner, although Carl and Donut have fought alongside Juice Box, Ferdinand, and the NPC defenders of Larracos. Near the end of the ninth floor, the Sledge casts Zerzura. The spell takes Larracos and adjoining Shanty Town to the twelfth floor, carrying the people who could not simply be left in the path of the ninth floor's destruction. The system then reports that Juice Box and Ferdinand have left the realm and forfeited their positions. It declares Team Retribution defeated and names the Princess Posse champion. The announcement records a technical result; it does not mean Carl's army conquered or killed the civilians of the city it had helped defend.
The transfer saves a population while placing it in another dangerous setting. Carl understands that the city will arrive amid the territory of the Celestial Ascendancy. Its residents are supposed to be protected until that contest begins, and Juice Box's changelings may be able to help guard them. Those safeguards are conditional. Zerzura moves the city out of the immediate battle, but the people of Larracos must still survive the gods and the rules of their new floor. Carl also realizes that the different kinds of mercenaries in and around the city will not all share the same destination. The victory separates allies whose lives had been joined by the war.
The official award does not erase the manner of the win. On the tenth floor Carl receives a “Default Winner” achievement whose description mocks the fact that the opposing warlords left the battlefield. Donut receives her own winner's box and numerous rewards for her actions at the end of the war. Carl sees a difference between their roles: Donut performed much of the immediate fighting, while he spent the ninth floor directing others into danger. He is relieved that the warlord's command role appears to have ended. The system treats the outcome as a reward event, but Carl's response preserves the burden of the decisions behind it.
The people who cannot continue together
Katia's departure makes the transition personal for Carl and Donut. Her problem with the Crown of the Sepsis Whore had shaped the Princess Posse's campaign against the Blood Sultanate. After the war's result, she asks Eileithyia for the pregnancy that will make her ineligible to continue as a crawler. Katia expects to help children endangered outside the dungeon. Donut assists in freeing the goddess from Huanxin Jinx before Katia's request is fulfilled. The system marks Katia ineligible, and she disappears after saying goodbye. The scene establishes her exit from the crawl; it does not show her arrival or safety at the place where she intends to help.
Carl and Donut have only minutes to leave the ninth floor after this farewell. Emberus begins its destruction, and the survivors head for the stairwells. At the same time, system messages report the Nothing draining into Sheol and Scolopendra's Lair, followed by a warning to guests at the Scolopendra Club and an announcement that Scolopendra has awakened. These notices connect the local end of Faction Wars to a disturbance deeper in the dungeon. The crawlers cross into the tenth floor without resolving what those messages mean for people on the lower levels.
The tenth floor immediately forces the survivors into a new arrangement. Its races divide crawlers into small teams and eliminate a team that comes last in each heat. Carl and Donut retain their ties to other veterans, but the floor can place people who fought on the same side into separate competing vehicles. Carl later reflects that he had felt some limited control during the large war, whereas the race format makes it harder to protect friends placed in other heats. His concern is concrete: Li Na and Zhang appear with Tran, and he expects the format to produce further matches among people he knows. Faction Wars has created a community of fighters, yet the next contest is built to thin that community.
Some of the shared work survives the change in rules. Carl and Donut continue to consult Mordecai, Rosetta, Tipid, Imani, and other allies as they prepare for the heats. Donut's war rewards contribute to their equipment, and the former Posse members share information rather than behaving as strangers newly assigned to separate teams. The inheritance from Faction Wars is therefore more than a victory title. It includes practical trust, a network of people who know one another's capabilities, and a reason to resist a competition that pits survivors against survivors.
The war leaves the dungeon
The Book 7 epilogue shows that some former crawlers regard the ninth-floor victory as the beginning of another operation. York is identified as a captain in the newly named Open Intellect Action Network. On the Homecoming Queen, Boomer orders equipment set aside for a pregnant veteran on Earth's surface and speaks of carrying the fight beyond the dungeon. The epilogue does not show that entire operation succeeding. It does establish that the veterans who returned for Faction Wars intend to support people outside the crawl rather than disappear once the warlord contest is over.
During a tenth-floor media appearance, the production assistant Lexis gives Carl and Donut a more developed account of events in orbit. She says the Open Intellect Action Network has boarded and taken control of nearly every major ship there. The Homecoming Queen is particularly powerful because its weapons can function in the changed enhancement conditions after the AI's escape from containment. Lexis describes a rapid takeover of the Earth system's ships, while also explaining that the insurgents restrict who may enter the production areas below. Her account is information given to the crawlers from outside; Carl and Donut do not witness the boarding actions themselves.
The upheaval affects the show without ending it. Lexis has been brought into Borant's production work because Zev is handling too many duties and other staff are barely functioning. The AI nevertheless insists that the broadcasts continue. Carl and Donut are still sent to Plenty of Plenty while ships change hands overhead and the surface remains unsettled. Their appearance demonstrates the odd overlap of the old entertainment system and the new balance of power: the crawl is still being presented to an audience even as the people once positioned to control it are losing their freedom of action.
News of Katia remains incomplete. Lexis tells Donut that the part of South Asia where the children are held is considered Open Intellect Action Network territory, but the network has not retaken the kinder facility. She has heard that Katia has been contacted and that a confused third party is protecting the site. She cannot give Donut a firm account of what occurred there. This uncertainty matters because Katia's ninth-floor exit was a choice made for the children; neither her farewell nor the network's military success proves that her intended rescue has been accomplished.
Control of the AI, gods, and tunnels
The escape of the AI's influence makes the war's consequences larger than Earth orbit. During the Plenty of Plenty encounter, Orren tells Carl and Donut that dungeon gods have begun appearing outside their assigned domain. He links the problem to the tunneling system and explains that the Plenty may be the only people able to shut it down. At that point, many unsponsored gods can appear only briefly and near physical tunnel nodes, but even that limit leaves places far from the dungeon exposed. Orren also confirms that the entity near Katia's facility is connected to this wider breach, while cautioning that it is a different god from the one Carl first names.
Carl turns Orren's attempt to get a private answer into a public warning. Instead of merely asking the Plenty about tunnel integrity, he asks on the live program whether the public knows that gods have escaped and that enhancement zones have reached the tunnels. His question forces the danger into the broadcast. The action follows the kind of confrontation that Carl and Donut used during Faction Wars: they use the spectacle prepared for them to expose information the organizers would prefer to manage. It does not itself stop the gods or repair the tunnels.
Later, Quasar watches reports of gods appearing near physical tunnel exits in different parts of the galaxy. Their appearances are brief, but the incidents show that the threat Orren described is not limited to a single location. The legal and military consequences of the war unfold alongside a system failure with a much wider reach. Victory over the warlord factions has not given the Princess Posse control over the AI, the tunneling network, or the entities moving through it.
Disputes over Donut and the prize
The winners' legal position is also contested. In the Book 7 epilogue Quasar tells Carl that, although he wanted to represent Donut, another lawyer has been assigned to her: Princess Chandra, Esquire. Donut has already met Chandra and rejected her offers. Quasar then tells Carl that Chandra is his new wife, leaving the basis of that claim unexplained at the end of the book. The disclosure puts Donut's representation and Carl's personal status into question just as the two enter the tenth floor.
Chandra's later account shows why the dispute matters to the former warlords. She has begun legal filings concerning Donut's income, the Princess Posse's accounts, and the Faction Wars prize money. She also pursues claims related to commercial uses of Donut's image and the Donut Holes' sponsorship. Her argument relies in part on the Syndicate's treatment of Donut's species and on asserted rights flowing through Carl. These are Chandra's positions and actions, not settled findings that she owns the funds or validly controls Donut. Donut rejects the arrangement rather than accepting Chandra's proposals.
Quasar continues to challenge the claimed marriage and its effects. By the end of the tenth-floor races he expects a hearing on the certificate's legality; his filing has delayed other steps Chandra has tried to take. The winner's prize has thus become a target of outside claims at the same time the crawlers need resources to survive another floor. Faction Wars gave Carl and Donut an official title and rewards, but neither the title nor the system's congratulation settles who can speak for Donut, control the Posse's money, or bind Carl through an alleged marriage.
