Carl and Mordecai

Carl and Mordecai begin as crawler and tutorial guide, but their relationship becomes a difficult form of mentorship and chosen family. Mordecai understands the crawl's systems, contracts, and historical traps. Carl values that knowledge while resisting the fatalism that comes from Mordecai having survived the system for so long.

Knowledge and disagreement

Mordecai's advice is usually grounded in experience: conserve resources, understand the audience, avoid unnecessary attention, and recognize when the rules hide a second cost. Carl often accepts the information but rejects the safest conclusion. Their conflicts arise because Mordecai wants the party to survive the known game, while Carl increasingly wants to damage the machinery behind it.

Mutual responsibility

Carl depends on Mordecai for context he cannot obtain from tooltips alone. Mordecai, in turn, becomes emotionally invested in Carl and Donut despite the danger of caring for another crawler team. That investment forces old grief and unfinished obligations back into his life.

The relationship matters because it connects the current crawl to earlier seasons. Mordecai is evidence that survival can preserve a person while also trapping them, and Carl's choices test whether knowledge inherited from previous crawlers can become something more than a manual for endurance.
