Carl's relationship with Odette begins when he and Princess Donut become guests on her interstellar talk show. Odette is a former crawler who can reach them outside the dungeon's ordinary public broadcasts, question them before an enormous audience, and sometimes speak to them privately. She gives Carl information that helps him survive, but also turns his experiences into entertainment and uses her access to pursue unfinished business with Mordecai. By the ninth floor, Carl knows enough of her history to understand why she is involved with his party, while still refusing to surrender his judgment to her.
The first interview
After Carl and Donut reach the second floor, an associate producer named Lexis invites them onto Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette. Their first visit begins in a production trailer that projects Odette and the audience into a studio around them. Donut is delighted by the prospect of an interview; Carl is uneasy about becoming a performer immediately after a dangerous fight. On camera, Odette presents herself in an extravagant crab-bodied costume with an insect-like head. Carl initially takes that appearance for her actual body.
Odette knows how to make the pair legible to her audience. She invites Donut to explain her title and lets the cat play to the crowd, then confronts Carl with a montage of his repeated exasperated remark to Donut. She also replays their fight with the Hoarder and asks why Donut appeared slow to help him, displaying their relative statistics as part of the joke. Carl gives restrained answers while Donut defends their partnership and promises the audience that their future victories will be spectacular. The interview makes clear to Carl that the show can turn an intimate disagreement, an improvised phrase, or a frightening battle into a recurring public story.
When the cameras stop, Odette dismisses her assistant and drops the costume. Carl discovers that she is a human woman who lost her legs during her own crawl and moves on a hovering platform. Her televised crab form reproduces the armor by which viewers remember her. She says she reached the stairwell for the thirteenth floor but made an exit deal rather than descending. The revelation gives her advice a different weight: she has firsthand experience with the dungeon's late floors, even though she now earns her living presenting other people's ordeals.
Odette explains that she once trained Mordecai, whose guild room first brought Carl and Donut to her attention. She asks Carl to tell him to seek her out when his service ends. She also warns the pair that their growing audience will affect future choices. In particular, she urges Donut to remain recognizably a cat during race selection, despite the power of other possible forms. She advises Carl to listen closely to Mordecai when selecting a class, because a guide who cannot openly direct a crawler can still offer useful clues.
Their discussion of loot is more unsettling. Odette tells Carl that rewards can suit what the show wants to see, using the item she received after losing her legs as an example. The belt let her attach a slain creature's body to herself, but obtaining a body forced her back into danger. Her point is that an apparently helpful reward can also create a more dramatic spectacle. She finishes by telling Carl to look for the benefit behind anyone's help. Asked what she gets from helping them, she points to the money their continued popularity brings her. Carl carries both the practical advice and the question of her motives back into the dungeon.
Advice that costs someone else
Carl delivers Odette's message to Mordecai and encounters a much harsher judgment of her. Mordecai wants no reunion. He describes her as clever and capable of helping Carl, but warns that her self-interest has limits Carl cannot yet see. Carl does not know the cause of their estrangement. Odette later admits that she pushed Mordecai too hard and that he suffered for it, while postponing the full explanation.
After the second floor, another interview gives Carl and Odette a quieter chance to speak. She assesses Mongo, Donut's newly acquired pet, as a potentially formidable fighter if they can keep him alive and under control. She also advises Carl to prioritize a class with strong navigation, to let Donut choose before he does so their builds can complement each other, and to inspect the system's class recommendation carefully. When Carl asks about the Valtay, she explains why contact from that corporation would demand caution. Her knowledge is useful, but she neither becomes a party member nor supplies a complete account of the forces surrounding them.
The choice of Mordecai's Manager benefit puts Carl's trust problem into concrete form. Odette has told him how to gain the benefit while making the choice appear to be Donut's spontaneous decision. It would keep Mordecai available to their party and give them access to his work in saferooms. Carl understands that the deception could damage a relationship with someone he considers a friend. He and Donut take the benefit anyway because they believe Mordecai's help is crucial to survival. Carl's acceptance of Odette's plan is therefore selective: he uses her knowledge while recognizing that her proposal transfers a cost to Mordecai.
Odette also controls what Carl learns in public. Following the third floor, she uses her show to explain how Borant's veto has stripped rewards from a quest involving Carl, Donut, and Katia. Carl responds with anger at a system in which spectacular effort can still be denied its promised prize. In a private conversation afterward, Odette warns him about threats connected to Katia and discloses that she bought Carl and Donut's interview rights early, when they were inexpensive. That admission complicates her original explanation that helping them is simply profitable: their success has made her investment unusually valuable, and her access to them was arranged before they knew her.
By the end of the fourth floor, Carl has come to value the private conversations after Odette's interviews as a source of survival information. Their usefulness becomes precarious when Borant places tighter controls on interviews and refreshments. Odette questions Katia and the others on air, but administrators interrupt a subject they do not want discussed. Carl sees both her power as a host and the limits imposed on it. When challenged about a separate sponsorship involving Hekla, she initially shifts responsibility to her husband on air, then tells Carl afterward that she herself was responsible. His reason for demanding clear motives from her has grown stronger, even as she continues to offer help.
On the fifth floor, a ban on third-party transport cancels Carl and Donut's next scheduled appearance. Odette appeals the restriction, but Carl and Donut still leave the floor without their usual conversation with her. The interruption matters because the interviews have become one of the few occasions when Carl can question an experienced former crawler away from ordinary dungeon encounters. He cannot simply summon Odette when he needs an answer; the production and its regulators decide when that access exists.
Beatrice and the limits of consent
Before Carl learns Beatrice is alive, Odette has already directed her recovery. Lexis finds Beatrice amid a violent encounter on Earth and contacts Odette after taking her into custody. Odette instructs Lexis to conceal what happened, leave one injured human to die, and arrange a false account involving a captured pirate and a cat. She intends to keep Beatrice away from Borant for a purpose she does not explain to Lexis in that exchange. Carl is absent from this scene, so his later questions to Odette are based on less information than the account of her intervention provides.
The conflict becomes personal on the sixth floor when Odette brings news of Beatrice, Carl's former girlfriend and Donut's former owner. Shortly before a scheduled interview, Odette tells Carl and Donut that Beatrice survived and has been taken off Earth. She says she had intended to keep Beatrice safe until the crawl ended, but a breach means another program could confront Carl with the story first. Carl demands to know why Odette intervened at all. She argues that leaving Beatrice available to hostile producers could have made her a weapon against the two crawlers, particularly Donut.
Zev reveals another part of the arrangement: Odette is using Beatrice's rescue in negotiations with Borant and has secured a larger share of revenue. Odette insists the contract was secondary. Carl invokes Odette's own rule about hidden motives and refuses to accept that answer on trust. When she proposes putting Beatrice on the show, he is furious and threatens to abandon the interview. Donut, whose history with Beatrice gives her a direct stake in the decision, chooses to proceed. Carl yields to Donut's decision, but his anger at Odette remains. She has given them advance warning and a chance to prepare, while also controlling the setting in which a painful reunion will be presented.
The interview itself does not deliver the confrontation Odette had anticipated. Donut stays composed in public, and Carl gives Beatrice little to work with. Once the recording ends, Donut tells Beatrice how deeply her planned abandonment hurt her. Carl closes his own connection with Beatrice and asks Odette to remove her. Odette acknowledges that the segment was less explosive than she had hoped. Carl's objections have therefore been justified on two levels: the rescue may have prevented worse exploitation elsewhere, but Odette still tried to make their private hurt into a program. Their working relationship continues without resolving that disagreement.
Mordecai's history and the Ascendancy
On the eighth floor, Carl's dealings with Odette become entangled with the approaching Celestial Ascendancy. She has an old conflict with Huanxin Jinx, a sponsor whose plans also affect Katia. Carl expects Odette to serve as the crawler faction's adjutant and believes that choice matters to a bargain involving Huanxin. During an interview, however, Odette announces that she will enter the Ascendancy herself as the goddess Nekhebit. Carl recognizes that she has seen a threat in the adjutant arrangement and changed her position. Her public announcement leaves him uncertain whether Huanxin will still honor what he needs for Katia.
In a brief private interval after the show, Carl confronts Odette over the change and over her repeated presence in plans that expose his friends to danger. She says her central purpose is Mordecai, rather than the money or fame she once emphasized to Carl. She then recounts her own history: after losing people close to her in her crawl, she became a guide in the hope of helping later crawlers. She offered to manage Mordecai's party, but pushed them to go farther while nearing the end of her own contract. On their tenth floor she made an illicit arrangement with Huanxin, who controlled the goddess Dodola. When the arrangement collapsed, Odette directed a plan that defeated the goddess and opened the way down, but Mordecai's brother Uzzi died. Mordecai blamed Odette for the loss.
Odette tells Carl that her eventual freedom did not end those consequences. She confessed her wrongdoing, while Huanxin later killed Odette's friend Armita, who had remained bound to the dungeon. Odette has continued watching Mordecai through his long service and has set aside resources for him and others she once managed. She frames her return to the dungeon as part of an effort to make amends and change the machinery that harmed them. Carl listens, but he does not treat an account of guilt as proof that every present plan is safe. He points out that she has been one of the crawl's most prominent broadcasters, celebrating the very suffering she now says she wants to end.
Odette's history explains why Carl and Mordecai can receive different things from the same woman. She gave Carl information that helped him navigate choices, recognized his value as a guest, and sometimes intervened against people who might use him. She also withheld essential motives, tried to steer his dealings with Mordecai and Huanxin, and staged Beatrice's return as an interview. Carl's challenge to her after the Nekhebit announcement is the clearest statement of their boundary: gratitude for past help does not give her authority over his party's future.
Contact during Faction Wars
Odette's involvement continues after she enters the Ascendancy. During a ninth-floor warlord council meeting, she appears without her familiar costume and temporarily hosts the proceedings when Chaco cannot do so. Carl and Donut are among the leaders she questions. She presses Carl's faction about its ability to withstand further fighting, while using the meeting to draw out competing leaders and explain rules that affect everyone at the table. Her ease with the microphone survives her change of role; Carl still sees an interviewer capable of turning a political confrontation into a widely watched event.
Carl also observes how much information Odette can bring into a room governed by communication restrictions. When he challenges the off-world factions' apparent knowledge of events outside the dungeon, she explains a loophole involving the names of programs in a feed directory. Carl pushes to close that channel. He notes her irritation, but cannot tell how much of her response is sincere. Later, when talk turns to the Blood Sultanate's entertainment holdings, Odette supplies a detail that helps Carl connect an outside program to his enemies. Even in a formal meeting, her words may offer him a useful clue without making her an uncomplicated ally.
Their relationship remains shaped by unequal access. Odette has watched Carl for much of his crawl, can appear before vast audiences, and has personal knowledge of the systems and people around him. Carl can question her, act on parts of her advice, and reject the rest. That pattern began in a studio when she asked him to perform for viewers and continued when he demanded an account of her conduct toward Mordecai. By the ninth floor, he knows more of what she lost and whom she hopes to save, but his decisions still turn on the immediate safety and agency of Donut, Mordecai, Katia, and the other people depending on him.
