> Spoiler scope: Carl's combat development from Book 1 through Faction Wars.
Build identity
Carl's combat build is an unarmed frontline fighter combined with a sapper, trap maker, and systems analyst. The combination looks contradictory. An unarmed specialist wants to close distance, while an explosives specialist wants time, space, and a controlled detonation. Carl makes the two halves support each other. Traps damage or reposition the enemy; close combat finishes whatever survives. His physical durability lets him place devices under pressure, and his engineering gives him answers to opponents too large to punch safely.
The build is shaped by necessity rather than fantasy preference. Carl enters the dungeon in boxers, a leather jacket, and footwear the AI soon removes from his practical future. Early loot and achievements strengthen his bare-foot attacks and unarmed skills. Later class and race choices formalize a direction that was already emerging: he will use his body, improvised tools, and the dungeon's own rules against threats built to overpower him.
Primal race
Choosing Primal gives Carl a race with unusual potential and deep historical significance. The selection is not a simple package of visible bonuses. Its value emerges through compatibility, hidden context, and the way the system reacts to a type associated with the origins of the crawl's technology and AI. Carl does not understand all of those implications at selection time.
Mechanically, the race supports a build that refuses narrow specialization. Carl can train, adapt, and interact with systems in ways that become increasingly important as the AI changes. Narratively, being Primal ties his personal progression to the suppressed history of the wider civilization. The body he uses to punch monsters is also evidence inside a political conflict he only gradually learns to name.
Compensated Anarchist class
The Compensated Anarchist class rewards Carl's instinct to attack structures of control. It complements traps, explosives, rule exploitation, and resistance to authority. The title is comic, but it accurately describes his position: the dungeon gives him prizes for disruptive behavior while trying to package that behavior as entertainment.
The class does not make rebellion safe. It gives Carl tools whose use can still harm bystanders or advance the AI's private interests. Every enhancement must be evaluated against who selected the reward and why. Carl's build becomes powerful partly because multiple actors want to influence it. His survival depends on taking useful benefits without accepting the role they are intended to assign.
Unarmed Combat and Pugilism
Unarmed Combat provides the general foundation for strikes without a conventional weapon. Pugilism strengthens the trained use of fists and close-range technique. Together with Carl's rising strength, these skills make his hands more effective than many early weapons. This is why seemingly valuable swords or clubs may be worse for him than an empty hand.
The advantage is reliability. Carl cannot easily be disarmed, and his inventory does not need to produce a weapon before he can fight. The disadvantage is exposure. Punching requires entering an enemy's reach. Poisoned skin, acid, spikes, grapples, size differences, and aura effects can turn contact into a trap. Carl compensates with protection, observation, and a willingness to use explosives when a clean melee exchange is foolish.
Foot Soldier, Smush, and the AI's fixation
Carl's foot-based skills develop because the AI rewards bare feet, stomping attacks, and increasingly specific forms of contact. Foot Soldier and Smush turn an embarrassing condition into meaningful damage. Toe rings add statistics or skill levels, making his feet equipment slots as well as weapons.
This branch cannot be separated from the AI's fetishistic attention. The system's enthusiasm influences achievements, descriptions, and rewards. Carl exploits the power while recognizing the violation. The resulting build is effective but never neutral. It is an example of coercive customization: the dungeon strengthens a behavior because someone controlling the rewards enjoys watching it.
Powerful Strike
Powerful Strike multiplies the damage of an unarmed attack and becomes especially valuable when combined with high strength, Pugilism, and a well-chosen target. The Enchanted Toe Ring of the Splatter Skunk boosts the skill early, helping establish Carl's preference for concentrated physical force.
The skill is best used when accuracy and timing are secure. Multiplying a strike does little if armor absorbs it or if the attack exposes Carl to a counter. Carl often uses another tool to create the opening: Donut staggers the target, a trap pins it, terrain limits movement, or an ally draws attention. The finishing blow is the visible moment, but the build's intelligence lies in everything arranged before it.
Sapper and bomb-making development
Sapper access expands Carl's ability to build traps and work with explosives. Workshops, recipes, components, and training gates matter because improvised bombs are not unlimited magic. Carl must acquire materials, protect work time, transport devices, and understand what the dungeon recognizes as a trap.
This branch scales his influence beyond arm's reach. A constructed device can defend a route while Carl is elsewhere, damage an enormous creature, or let weaker allies participate in a plan. It also creates ethical and operational risks. Explosives do not distinguish NPC from crawler. The goblin cart bomb remains a warning that technical success can be moral failure.
Trap Construction
Trap Construction sits between engineering and psychology. A device must not only function; an enemy must encounter it in the intended state. Carl uses corpses, containers, rooms, vehicles, and ordinary-looking objects as delivery systems. The rat-corpse trap against Frank and Maggie shows both the ingenuity and the danger of indirect violence, especially when Yvette becomes part of the aftermath.
Good trap use requires target validation, a safe arming process, and a plan for disarming or recovering the device. In a crowded coalition, undocumented traps are as dangerous as enemy mines. Carl's later leadership responsibilities make communication and marking more important than they were when the party had only two members.
Escape Plan and Protective Shell
Escape Plan supports withdrawal or rapid survival decisions when an encounter collapses. Protective Shell creates a defensive space whose boundaries and duration can be integrated into more complex tactics. Neither ability is simply a panic button. Their value depends on recognizing failure early enough to activate them.
Protective effects can create false confidence. A shell may block damage but restrict movement, expire under sustained pressure, or interact badly with an environmental rule. Escape abilities may be suppressed on a later floor. Carl's planning improves when he treats these skills as time-buying tools rather than guarantees.
Equipment synergy
Carl's boxers, jacket, toe rings, gauntlets, protective gear, and utility items form a deliberately unconventional equipment set. Each piece should be evaluated by how it supports the build. Strength bonuses multiply unarmed damage. Skill bonuses can be more valuable than raw armor. A gauntlet may enhance a strike while preserving the unarmed classification. Knee or foot protection helps him survive the contact his preferred attacks require.
The jacket becomes a platform for patches and affiliations, some useful and some politically loaded. Equipment also carries visual meaning. Carl's exposed legs and bare feet make him recognizable to viewers, while the battle-worn jacket connects him to the anarchist image growing around him. The build is therefore optimized in public, under the gaze of fans, sponsors, enemies, and the AI.
The Cookbook as a combat resource
The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is not a weapon in the ordinary sense. It supplies accumulated knowledge from earlier crawlers who learned how rules fail, how corporations cheat, and how apparently impossible encounters can be subverted. For Carl, that information improves every other part of the build.
The Cookbook also imposes secrecy. If the wrong people learn he has it, the advantage disappears and the authors' legacy may be destroyed. Carl must decide which insights to share without exposing the source. This creates friction with allies, but it also distinguishes his build from a list of statistics. His most powerful asset is a conversation across seasons of resistance.
Close combat procedure
Carl's typical melee sequence begins with assessment. He identifies contact hazards, armor, reach, regeneration, and escape routes. He then looks for a way to force the target into a bad position. Donut or another ally may interrupt at range. Carl closes during that interruption, uses a high-value strike, and avoids remaining in a static exchange.
Against groups, movement matters more than a single powerful punch. He uses bodies, walls, and narrow spaces to prevent simultaneous attacks. Against large targets, he may climb, attach a device, or strike a joint rather than contest mass directly. Against intelligent enemies, he adds misdirection, making the opponent defend against the explosive plan while the real attack comes from his body, or the reverse.
Weaknesses
The build's clearest weakness is that Carl must often be physically close to danger. A grappler, corrosive enemy, contact curse, or overwhelming mass can punish that commitment. His explosives require preparation and can be restricted by location, missing components, or the presence of civilians. His strongest information source cannot be openly cited to every ally.
His personality adds another weakness. Carl has a high tolerance for personal risk and a tendency to conceal plans that might frighten the people he loves. This can produce brilliant surprises, but it can also deny teammates the chance to prepare or object. As command scale grows, a plan that exists only in Carl's head becomes a liability.
Growth into warfare
Faction Wars forces the build to scale from encounter tactics to military operations. Carl remains a dangerous brawler, but his greater value lies in designing operations, exploiting phase rules, and coordinating specialists. Offensive magic suppression increases the relative importance of physical skills, equipment, engineering, and non-spell movement.
The battlefield also provides more targets than Carl can personally reach. He must delegate construction, assign commanders, and accept that other people will execute parts of the plan differently. His progression is therefore organizational as well as mechanical. The solitary man who entered in boxers becomes one node in a resistance capable of acting without waiting for his fist.
