The Florida Keys region is the Eighth Floor destination assigned to Carl and Princess Donut during the second phase of The Ghosts of Earth. Donut selects an option labeled Miami, but the pair arrive on a narrow island in Monroe County. Their marked exit key lies west of their arrival point, beyond a sequence of card-carrying opponents. A selection error places the key challenge in Iowa while leaving Carl and Donut in Florida; the dungeon resolves the mismatch by moving a large piece of Iowa onto the island. The resulting route joins a coastal town and reef to a deteriorating farm landscape, ending in a trailer that contains a recording from Carl's family history.

Arrival in Monroe County

Carl and Donut are separated briefly during the move between phases. Donut reaches the new region first with Mongo and defeats Robert the Human inside their arrival house. Robert has two totems, neither of which prevents Mongo from killing him before he can mount an effective card fight. Carl appears in the house afterward, where the system identifies their location as Monroe County, Florida, on December 24. The squad has forty-six hours left to collect its key. The house has a saferoom entrance, a working light switch, and a Christmas tree, but its apparent domestic setting gives no protection from the compulsory encounters outside.

Donut explains that her destination menu offered four labeled choices, including Iowa, the Bahamas, Ibiza, and Miami. She chose Miami, then received a notice that a problem would send them to Iowa instead. Carl's own location message says Florida, and the visible palms, warm air, and island shapes on the map support their actual placement in the Keys. The key marker initially remains in Iowa, outside the map area they can use. After a system pause and a tremor, the map changes and places the marker only a few miles west. The correction makes the key reachable but does not restore an ordinary Florida landscape around it.

Zev later tells the pair that the selection malfunction affected other crawlers as well. Under the intended rule, squad leaders should have received three choices: one selected by the production staff, one by the System AI, and one random location. Some received too many or too few. Her explanation establishes why Donut's extra option cannot be treated as a normal property of the Keys route. The destination nevertheless follows a clue Carl and Donut had previously received from Rosetta: the television programs shown to Donut during Shadow Boxer were all set in Miami. Carl had not recognized the pattern, and the clue gives the choice a significance separate from the malfunction.

Outside the house, Carl finds a beach town with a two-lane road and streetlamps. Memory ghosts travel along the road, but he sees no ordinary traffic or nearby crawler dots. The absence of cars suggests that other crawlers used this reconstruction during the floor's first phase, though Carl treats that as an inference rather than a confirmed account of who had been there. Donut sends her Torch spell high above the island to inspect the way west. Its light reveals a massive earth pile rising above the narrow cay and extending into the ocean. The key marker points toward its upper reaches. Zev confirms that the key location was lifted from Iowa and placed in Florida because the staff could not otherwise repair the mismatch without further disruption. Carl warns that a land mass set on a reef, exposed to the sea and far warmer weather, may not remain stable for long.

The road and the first six tokens

The region's key route requires nine numbered tokens before the final keyholder can be challenged. Each ordinary deckmaster along the route carries a token and a card deck. Robert's death gives Donut the first token. Carl and Donut then follow a visible progression of red opponent dots west along the road. The early enemies remain in place until the squad approaches, making them resemble staged checkpoints more than wandering monsters. This apparent predictability helps the pair move quickly, but it also means the path toward the transplanted mound is fixed by the tokens rather than by open exploration.

The second opponent is a level-45 Babababoon waiting near a parking lot with a saferoom and a Desperado Club marked closed for emergency renovations. Carl kills him with an explosive before he plays a card. The fallen deck includes three totems, one of them a much stronger Skunk Ape, but Carl and Donut do not abandon one of their own active totems to test it. They take the second numbered token. The third opponent is a level-50 turtle-like creature; the fourth and fifth have bodyguards intended to keep Carl and Mongo from immediately reaching the deckmasters. All three encounters still end before the opposing side can make its deck matter. The fights provide experience, even while their card mechanics barely come into play.

The sixth opponent waits at the base of the displaced land, where the mound blocks the road and covers a bridge toward another island. He is a level-65 Reef Explorer in a glowing deep-diving suit, guarded by four Swordfish Interlopers. Their bodies and attacks make them more dangerous than the earlier guards: one spits water to knock Carl's explosive off course, while others launch themselves through the air with their sword-like heads. The Reef Explorer also manages to summon swordfish totems and strengthen one with utility cards. For the first time on this route, Donut must use her own deck rather than rely on Carl and Mongo ending the fight immediately.

Donut summons Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang, a combined totem made from Uzi Jesus and Asojano. His weapon releases a swarm that destroys several swordfish, including summoned pieces. She then calls Raul, whose magic can harm the ghost-class Reef Explorer, and strengthens Raul's speed so he can pursue and finish the retreating deckmaster. The encounter shows both sides of Donut's improving card play: her summons defeat a threat physical attacks cannot easily settle, while Lazarus's hostility toward Carl reminds the group that a powerful totem may have a difficult personality. Donut takes the sixth coin after the fight.

The Iowa land mass

The squad rests in a saferoom inside a roadside shrimp shack before climbing. Donut admits that the Reef Explorer nearly had a strategy that could have killed Carl if the fight had lasted longer. She also worries about being responsible for the deck while Carl and Mongo are exposed to cards they cannot predict. Their pause matters to the route: the sixth fight has ended the series of effortless wins, and the remaining opponents stand above them on a physically failing piece of land. When they return in daylight, melting snow and surf have turned much of its slope to mud. Carl uses his enhanced climbing ability to ascend with Donut while the soil continues to shift.

At the top, the system identifies the area as Dallas County, Iowa, even though ocean lies on both sides. Carl sees farmhouses, a small trailer park, and part of a commercial farm. Snow that belonged to the Iowa reconstruction is melting in Florida's warmth, and sections of the raised ground fall away. An explosion Carl throws at hidden creatures damages a farmhouse and accelerates a fracture through the road. The area is therefore hazardous even between token fights: attacking a monster can destroy the ground needed to reach the next one.

Deckmaster seven is the Visitor, a level-70 Nightgaunt accompanied by Quench Moths. Carl's cloak aggravates the creature so strongly that it fixates on him instead of using its substantial card deck. Donut summons Jola the Yule Cat, whose candle reveals the invisible enemy and whose size lets him kill the Visitor. Afterward the pair find that the Visitor carried many totems and Lamp snare cards, a potentially dangerous combination with moths drawn to light. Donut takes useful cards, but the unused deck illustrates the unevenness of the staged fights: a deckmaster can possess an elaborate plan and still die without playing it. The continuing erosion leaves little reason to linger over the loot.

The eighth and ninth tokens are held in the same farm building. Thousands of living white turkeys crowd an overheated barn transplanted from winter Iowa. The warmth endangers them, and some have already died. Mongo begins attacking the birds before Carl can remove him. One apparently unreachable turkey proves to be Tom, the eighth deckmaster, while a spiked ogre necromancer named Sharp-Elbows is the ninth. Both activate together, turning what appeared to be another orderly checkpoint into a two-deck fight. Carl must recover the unconscious Mongo amid the birds while Donut plays cards against two opponents at once.

Tom uses cards that turn the turkeys hostile and suppress allied spellcasting, including Carl's magic during the fight. Sharp-Elbows summons guards and a necromantic staff that raises dead turkeys as zombies. The barn's heat lamps also make Carl's bombs detonate early, removing one of his usual ways to clear enemies safely. Donut steals a card from Sharp-Elbows's hand and calls several totems, but the opponents' combined effects repeatedly change which attacks are available. Meanwhile the barn itself slips toward the cliff. Carl kills Tom with a forceful strike, then helps bring down Sharp-Elbows, suffering severe injuries from her spikes. Donut gets him away as the structure collapses into the ocean. Carl has placed both defeated deckmasters' bodies in his inventory, preserving their tokens even though the battlefield disappears.

Donut recovers more than the two coins. She takes Sharp-Elbows's reusable staff card and a Golden Combo card, which change what her deck can do later. The necromancy is less contained: zombie turkeys remain active after Tom dies, and other farm animals become infected. Some drift or fall toward the Florida strip below as the mound breaks apart. The transplanted Iowa site has now affected the surrounding Keys directly, rather than serving only as a raised platform for a private key challenge.

The trailer and keyholder

Nine tokens open the final area through a vending machine outside a trailer. Its warning states that leaving after activation would require nine more tokens, although the region contains only nine. Donut initially offers to enter alone because she recognizes the motorcycle parked outside: Carl had reacted to the same machine when it appeared in an earlier prize carousel. She understands that the trailer is likely connected to his father. Carl chooses to enter with her, unwilling to trade an attainable key for the later necessity of fighting other crawlers.

The trailer yard differs from the snowy Iowa land around it. It has summer growth, weathered vehicles, flower pots, and sharp cuts where the inserted space meets its neighbors. The system confirms that this small area comes from another time instance and warns that physical interactions here work differently. Carl can take objects from the yard, including his father's motorcycle, without their entering the inventory category reserved for temporary Eighth Floor objects. Depositing the tokens starts a countdown before the keyholder fight. During that interval, Carl enters the trailer while Donut and Mongo wait outside.

Inside, Carl sees a recording of his father near death in a hospital bed. A boy called Asher is present, and photographs make Carl realize that Asher is his previously unknown half-brother. The woman living there is Carl's father's new wife and Asher's mother. Carl watches her prepare a fatal overdose for the bedridden man, while the boy remains unaware of its full meaning. Zev tells Carl that what he is seeing before the timer expires records an event that actually happened. The memory does not give him a chance to warn or speak with its occupants; he can only witness them. Carl leaves some of Asher's keepsakes in place, takes other belongings, and sets the trailer's curtains on fire before the countdown ends.

The fire removes the confined interior as a place for the impending fight. The actual keyholder emerges as a many-headed hydra built from the likenesses of people connected to Carl and Donut, including Asher. One head serves as a deckmaster, and its cards summon hostile versions of Carl and a kitten called King Croissant. The creature's heads have different attacks and resistances. Carl determines that destroying the head responsible for fire and burning the wound will prevent its regeneration. He uses a shrinking collar to sever the head bearing Bea's mother, then ignites the wound. Donut's summons, particularly Shi Maria, tear away other heads while Carl fights through burns and Alpha Carl's attacks. Asher's likeness is destroyed during the battle. The final heads die, ending the card fight and leaving the keyholder's corpse.

Carl and Donut take the floor key from that corpse. Their victory leaves the transplanted Iowa ground still collapsing, so they cannot treat the mound as a secure refuge or a lasting part of the coast. The Florida Keys challenge has forced them through three linked hazards: numbered card fights along the shoreline, a winter farm disintegrating in tropical weather, and a deliberately personal memory attached to the final key. Its key opens a route back in their original Cuban region, but the family knowledge Carl gains in the trailer cannot be left behind with the temporary landscape.
