Frank Q and Maggie My were divorced human crawlers whose reunion on the night of the Collapse developed into a violent partnership inside the World Dungeon. Both were law-enforcement officers before the crawl: Frank worked in customs enforcement, while Maggie was a detective with the Seattle Police Department. They entered the dungeon with their teenage daughter, Yvette, and Maggie's younger brother. Guided toward killing other crawlers, Frank and Maggie used their law-enforcement manner, firearms, stealth, and tracking abilities to deceive and murder fellow survivors. Their partnership made them early enemies of Carl and Princess Donut, but it also accelerated the destruction of their own family.
The couple's shared story is governed by their treatment of Yvette. Although both parents claimed to act for their family's survival, they repeatedly overrode their daughter's refusal to kill. They eventually forced her to wear the Ring of Divine Suffering and mark Carl for death, leaving her unable to heal after Frank triggered Carl's explosive trap. Maggie killed Yvette to end her suffering. Frank and Maggie then blamed Carl, fought over whether to pursue revenge, and separated. Maggie later killed Frank through the body of Chris Andrews, bringing their already broken relationship to a fatal conclusion.
Marriage, separation, and reunion
Frank and Maggie had separated five years before the Collapse and were divorced, despite presenting themselves to other crawlers as a married couple. Their surviving marriage had already been marked by conflict over Yvette. Frank said that the teenager had run away more than once and that Maggie's younger brother, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy, blamed him for her problems. Frank also acknowledged that he was an accomplished liar, a quality Maggie had used against him during their marriage and cited as the reason for their divorce.
Yvette's latest disappearance brought the former spouses together again. The deputy found her and called both parents to retrieve her. Frank left a surveillance assignment, and the four met in a parking lot at approximately two in the morning on an exceptionally cold night. They were all arguing when the surface structures vanished and a dungeon entrance appeared. Yvette ran into the tunnel first, and Maggie followed her. Frank pushed Maggie during the confusion, leading her brother to try to handcuff him. The two men entered while fighting, and Frank choked the deputy unconscious. Rat-kin killed him before he recovered.
The dungeon treated Frank's attack on his former brother-in-law as combat with a family member and awarded him a legendary box. It contained the Enchanted Night Wyrm's Ring of Divine Suffering. The ring granted a percentage increase to all attributes and allowed its wearer to mark a healthy crawler for death. If the target died, the wearer received a permanent attribute increase; while the target remained alive, however, the wearer could not heal. The reward converted the family's preexisting violence into a powerful incentive to continue treating other people as resources.
Their reunion therefore did not repair the marriage. It confined two hostile former spouses, their resistant daughter, and Maggie's protective brother inside a lethal game. The deputy died almost immediately because Frank incapacitated him, and the ring Frank received for that act became the mechanism through which Frank and Maggie later endangered Yvette. The family's first moments underground established the pattern that continued through both parents' deaths: they described their choices as protection while repeatedly making the family less safe.
A joint strategy of crawler murder
Frank, Maggie, and Yvette visited a tutorial guild together. Their game guide, a floating Mind Horror, told them that killing other crawlers was the only way they could survive. Yvette wept during the instruction. Frank and Maggie accepted the guide's premise and built a coordinated strategy around it, but Yvette did not. The guide's manipulation influenced the parents without removing their agency: subsequent dungeon footage showed them selecting vulnerable targets, staging friendly encounters, and choosing when to open fire.
Their attack on the group containing Rebecca W demonstrated the division of labor. Frank and Maggie approached a larger party, introduced themselves as husband and wife, and identified Yvette as their daughter. Once the other crawlers turned their backs, both parents shot into the group. Frank pursued Rebecca when she escaped and killed her after cornering her in a quadrant containing scatterer bugs. Maggie remained with a wounded survivor and put a gun into Yvette's hand, ordering her to finish the victim for experience. Yvette refused.
The couple repeated the method against isolated crawlers who were relieved to encounter other humans. The dungeon recap showed elderly and apparently homeless survivors among their targets. Yvette was present during some attacks and absent during others, but she never joined the killings. By the time the couple confronted Carl and Donut, Frank carried three crawler-killer skulls and Maggie carried five. Their eight kills produced specialized rewards: Maggie obtained an area-of-effect stealth ability, while Frank gained Find Crawler, which revealed nearby survivors. Their abilities complemented one another. Frank could locate potential victims, and Maggie could conceal the family inside a fixed stealth field while they prepared an ambush.
Their cooperation also depended on deception. When Frank entered a First Floor saferoom occupied by Carl and Donut, he claimed that he and Maggie had been monitoring a human-trafficking group before the Collapse. He recast Rebecca as a criminal who had shot Maggie and forced him to kill in self-defense, and he implied that Maggie was dead. Maggie was actually hidden nearby with Yvette. Frank's lie kept Carl engaged while the couple communicated through chat and moved into position.
Carl uncovered the deception from several inconsistencies. Rebecca had lived long enough to visit a tutorial guild, contradicting Frank's account of an immediate firefight at the entrance. Frank also received less than the full experience value of a saferoom cookie, revealing that he remained in a party with someone alive. When Frank and Maggie fired, the saferoom's prohibition on crawler violence froze both of them before their bullets struck. Carl and Donut escaped, leaving the parents immobilized and Yvette concealed in the room.
The ring and Yvette's death
Before the saferoom attack, Frank and Maggie had forced Yvette to wear the Ring of Divine Suffering because she was not gaining levels through murder. They selected Carl as her target. Frank later explained that they chose the human rather than Donut because they expected the cat might escape. Yvette applied the mark, waited for it to become active, and remained unable to heal for as long as Carl lived. What the parents described as a compromise required their daughter to benefit from a stranger's death even though she had consistently rejected their method of survival.
After escaping the saferoom, Carl anticipated that Frank would strip another corpse just as the couple had stripped Rebecca. He placed a lit smoke bomb, a lit stick of dynamite, and an unstable explosive in the inventory of a dead dungeon rat. Carl did not know that Yvette was present. Once the parents recovered from the saferoom penalty, all three approached the rat. Maggie warned Frank not to loot it, but he ignored her. He removed the lit dynamite, dropped it in surprise, and triggered the explosion while the family fled.
The blast injured all three crawlers. Shrapnel severed Frank's right hand and left Yvette in severe pain. Because Carl remained alive, the ring's mark prevented her injuries from healing. Maggie knelt beside her daughter, wept, and strangled her. Frank was incapacitated nearby and did not stop her. The killing ended Yvette's pain, but the fatal condition resulted from the parents' joint decisions: they had forced her to wear the ring, chosen Carl as the mark, and attacked him in a saferoom. Frank then ignored Maggie's warning about the suspicious corpse.
At first, observers did not know about the mark and assumed Yvette could have recovered. The Maestro later placed Frank and Maggie opposite Carl and Donut on his program and aired edited footage of the family's crawl. The broadcast exposed the Mind Horror's advice, the ambush of Rebecca's group, the pattern of other murders, Yvette's refusal to participate, the saferoom attack, and the explosion. Maggie insisted that the program had omitted essential information, but she did not explain the ring. Frank remained largely silent and avoided Carl's gaze.
The appearance publicly fixed the former spouses into a shared revenge narrative. Maggie tried to attack Carl through the program's barrier and threatened to hunt both him and Donut. Frank attempted to restrain her, but she pushed him away. The Maestro then gave the pair a legendary skill potion capable of raising Find Crawler to level fifteen, or potentially level twenty if taken after selecting a compatible class. The gift transformed Maggie's threat into an entertainment storyline and gave the couple a potential means to locate their targets anywhere in the dungeon.
Breakup and opposing forms of revenge
Frank and Maggie argued after the broadcast and separated near the end of the Second Floor. According to Frank, the dispute concerned Carl and Donut as well as the family's most valuable assets. Frank wanted to sell both the legendary potion and the Ring of Divine Suffering, then use the proceeds to obtain equipment and training. Maggie kept the potion and remained committed to direct revenge. Frank did not know whether she drank it; their guide had advised waiting until class selection so that the skill could reach its maximum level.
The separation revealed that neither parent had abandoned the idea of vengeance, but they pursued it differently. Maggie continued hunting Carl and Donut. Frank withdrew from active progress, drank heavily, and eventually settled at a Desperado Club bar on the Iron Tangle. He admitted that Carl had acted in self-defense and that Maggie was blaming the wrong person. He nevertheless wanted Carl to suffer. Instead of attacking him, Frank transferred the ring and predicted that its power would corrupt Carl as it had corrupted his own family.
Frank's account at the bar supplied facts the public broadcast had left unexplained. He admitted that he and Maggie had compelled Yvette to use the ring and that Maggie selected Carl as the mark. He also described Yvette as unlike either parent and recognized that her repeated attempts to run away had been acts of self-preservation. His remorse did not amount to reconciliation with Maggie or absolution for himself. He continued to frame the ring as revenge and wanted Carl to experience the temptation that had helped ruin the family.
Maggie's killing of Frank
Frank died soon after giving Carl the ring. Witnesses initially saw Chris Andrews sit beside him at the Desperado Club, speak with him, crush his head, and walk away. Chris was banned from the club for the killing. The attack appeared inexplicable because it contradicted his established behavior and because he had no known personal dispute with Frank.
The Fifth Floor revealed Maggie as the controlling agent. She had become a Scree infiltrator, a parasitic creature capable of annexing a living host's body while leaving the host conscious but powerless. From inside Chris, she controlled his actions and used his Igneous body as armor. Maggie later explicitly told Carl that she had killed Frank. Her precise motive for murdering her former husband is never stated, so the act cannot be reduced with certainty to a search for the ring, punishment for abandoning her vendetta, or another private grievance.
Maggie's action completed the reversal of their First Floor partnership. The two had begun the crawl attacking strangers together in the name of keeping their family alive. After Yvette's death, Frank rejected Maggie's pursuit but tried to corrupt Carl indirectly; Maggie continued the pursuit and killed Frank through another crawler's body. Her method also reproduced the coercion at the center of their family story. Just as she and Frank had overridden Yvette's refusal to kill, Maggie deprived Chris of control and made him physically perform a murder he had not chosen.
Maggie died later on the Fifth Floor during a final attempt to stop Carl. Once she was forced out of Chris's body, Mongo killed the Scree worm, while Chris survived. Her death ended the direct conflict begun by the former spouses, but the item they had imposed on Yvette continued to shape Carl's choices. He used the Ring of Divine Suffering on later floors and experienced the escalating incentives Frank had described. Near the end of the Ninth Floor, Carl rejected its hold and gave the original ring to Donut, who swallowed it. The material legacy of Frank and Maggie's shared decisions therefore ended with the ring removed from Carl's possession rather than with their strategy vindicated.
