Shi Maria, also known as the Screamer, the Widow Endless, and the Bedlam Bride, is a Reaper Spider Minion whose bargain with Carl and Donut carries her beyond the eighth floor. The dungeon identifies her there as a level 140 city boss and a demigod. At first she is a dangerous but useful member of Donut's T'Ghee card deck. After a failed attempt to combine her card with another totem, she uses Carl's body to place the Eye of the Bedlam Bride on his chest. The card can be destroyed; the presence attached to Carl cannot be disposed of so easily. Her efforts to regain freedom, and Carl's efforts to contain her, continue through the ninth floor.

The Screamer and the missing husband
Before meeting her, Carl consults an illustrated account of the Screamer in the Bahamas book. It presents her as a former inhabitant of the celestial realm who practices illusion, fear, and mental magic. According to that account, her husband, a deity from an old pantheon, has disappeared. The story that she killed and consumed him is presented as a legend rather than an established fact: Shi Maria denies the accusation, although the account suggests she sometimes doubts her own memory. Her exile and her determination to find him explain why passage away from her swamp matters to her. They do not establish that her version of his disappearance is true.
The account also gives Carl practical reasons to fear an encounter. It lists Unending Insanity and Lights Out among her high-level spells; the latter blinds, while the former threatens lasting mental damage. Her other listed powers include illusion, fear-based paralysis, web production through Spinneret, and a venomous bite. Psionic attacks are the only weakness recorded there. Mordecai prepares Liquid Therapy for the party before they approach her, along with measures against webbing and venom. This preparation is aimed at surviving a hostile meeting, even though Samantha insists that Shi Maria is her new friend.
The system's description at their meeting adds another account of her past. It calls Reaper Spider Minions creatures associated with the fifteenth floor, often encountered elsewhere as traveling merchants, and treats Shi Maria as an exceptional member of that kind. Its story also says she was expelled from the celestial realm after her marriage to a god ended disastrously. Both descriptions associate her with her husband's supposed death, but neither gives Carl an eyewitness account of what happened. Even the system presents parts of her history as reported story. Shi Maria's own insistence that she must prove her innocence remains a motive, not a verified explanation.
Encounter in the swamp
Samantha reaches Shi Maria first after an improbable journey that leaves her in the spider's web. By the time Carl and Donut arrive, webbing covers the roadside and nearby trees; caught objects and remains mark the territory. Shi Maria emerges from the branches above them. Her huge spider body bears a woman's head on an unnaturally long neck, with four dark eyes and a smaller, initially closed eye in her forehead. The system identifies her as the Bedlam Bride and warns of permanent insanity. Donut's examination finds a level 15 Cockroach ability in addition to the powers Carl expected, making a quick killing blow even less reliable.
Samantha calls the spider MaeMae and confidently announces a shared future: Shi Maria will restore her body, accompany the group, travel to Larracos, and eventually receive help finding her husband. Carl has already noticed that the magic listed for Shi Maria does not include the body transfer Samantha expects. When he challenges the plan, Shi Maria admits that she cannot perform the required magic herself. She instead claims to know a master pulpmancer in Larracos who could help Samantha and release Shi Maria from card confinement. Carl knows the supposed shop is in Larracos's flooded lower levels, so the promise is uncertain even apart from his distrust of her.
Carl offers a narrower bargain. If Shi Maria lets herself be captured as a card and helps the party, he will carry her downward. He explicitly forbids her from blinding, maddening, or injuring his allies and threatens to tear up the card if she does. Shi Maria accepts because a card offers a route out of the swamp, despite putting her temporarily at Donut's mercy. She speaks directly to Carl once he presses her and says that reaching Larracos is necessary to find her husband and clear her name. A system quest to escort the Bedlam Bride to that city follows their negotiation. Their alliance rests on compatible immediate aims, not trust: Carl wants a powerful totem for the remaining floor, while Shi Maria wants passage and eventual release.
Donut's most powerful card
As a summoned totem, Shi Maria is far more than a stored monster. Her arrival has an elaborate display and a 120-second timer, but while active she observes the fight, speaks, chooses targets, and addresses Donut's cards and available buffs. In practice battles, Carl judges her the strongest card in the deck by a wide margin. She can rapidly eliminate opponents: in one arena fight, she paralyzes the level 50 Mushika and swallows it before it completes its own summoning. Her size, speed, and magic make her an answer to threats that other cards cannot readily stop. The timer limits how long she remains on the field; it does not make her obedient.
The deck's early trials expose the danger of summoning her beside other strong personalities. When Donut brings out Uzi Jesus and then Shi Maria, Jesus fires on her. She impales him, disarms him, and demands healing; the exercise nearly becomes a fight between allies instead of a test against the intended opponent. In another encounter, she skewers Raul the crab and uses his body to strike a group of kappas. These episodes show that her usefulness depends on the behavior of every totem present, not simply on Donut choosing the correct card. Carl and Donut practice partly to discover such interactions before relying on the deck under more dangerous conditions.
Card rules can restrain her without changing her temperament. In a deck battle, a Damnation snare diverts her into a prolonged fight with a hard-to-hit mud creature. She eventually kills it, but times out and is sent to the discard pile, enraged. Sharp Elbows later uses a snare to send her back into Donut's deck almost as soon as she appears. Conversely, when Donut can summon her during a confrontation with Quan's group, Shi Maria kills quickly enough that Donut warns Carl she is consuming bodies on the field. Her power makes her central to the deck, while the deck's timers, snares, and draw order keep her from being an unconditional solution.
Shi Maria also has relationships within the summoned group. Donut reports that she and Lazarus compete to kill opponents first and that Shi Maria seems jealous of his entrance. Samantha remains unusually friendly with her and continues to use MaeMae as a nickname. These exchanges matter because Shi Maria reacts to the company and circumstances of a summon. She is not merely a spell Donut casts. Her ability to assess cards and bargain with crawlers makes the original escort agreement increasingly precarious as the group nears the end of the floor.
The Golden Combo and the eye
The bargain breaks down during a desperate battle near the end of the eighth floor. Carl needs Donut to clear her hand so the party can escape. He tells her to summon Shi Maria and Alpha Carl, then use Golden Combo to merge those two totems while the others work. Shi Maria appears in cramped surroundings and immediately drives a leg through Alpha Carl's head. With the intended partner incapacitated, the card selects Carl as its next eligible target and combines him with her. The substitution turns a tactical attempt to occupy two difficult cards into direct access to Carl's body.
Carl remains aware during the combination but repeatedly loses control of his actions. Shi Maria explores his inventory and abilities while he struggles to resist. She uses toraline and a beaker to make dark tattoo ink, casts Self-Immolation to burn through the floor, and injures Mongo and Katia amid the escape. When Li Jun arrives to help, she uses Carl's tattoo tool to take his eye and forces Carl to consume it. She then rapidly works the new ink into his chest. Her stated reason is that if the party will not carry her card to the next floor, she must attach herself to something they cannot discard as easily. The eye is therefore a deliberate answer to the threat Carl made when they first bargained.
When the combination times out, Carl regains his usual form and Shi Maria returns to the deck. The fresh tattoo closes and becomes almost invisible, but Carl can still feel it; the system identifies it only as the Eye of the Bedlam Bride. Donut tears up Shi Maria's card after the battle, furious over Mongo's injuries. The escort quest does not disappear. Carl recognizes that destroying the card has ended one means of summoning her without severing the new connection. On the ninth floor, his recollection of Mongo's damaged wing and Li Jun's eye keeps the cost of her brief control immediate and personal.
Intrusion on the ninth floor
The eye remains active after the change of floors. Shi Maria speaks to Carl within his mind, and the tattoo responds to people and events around him. Its presence affects more than his perception: during a dangerous encounter, Carl finds records of repeated attempts to activate spells or skills that he did not authorize. He connects those attempts to Shi Maria and realizes that one attempted use of Gloom Wraith Phase could have killed Donut by setting off nearby bombs. His trained Mind Balance skill and the protective Wisp Armor spell help him resist, but neither gives him grounds to assume she has stopped trying.
Mordecai develops a procedure intended to trap the presence in a memory rather than simply remove the visible tattoo. Carl is to enter an induced dream involving Shi Maria's worst memory. A substance called Removal Order should let him confine her there; if successful, the mark will remain on his chest while he gains control of it. The plan is uncertain, and the risk of failure is that he awakens with an angrier entity still attached. Katia undergoes a related dream procedure. The two experiences unexpectedly intersect, bringing Shi Maria into Katia's memory as she protests that she did not kill her husband. A male voice then contradicts her. The dream shows her swallowing him, but the episode takes place inside manipulated memories, and Carl's later recollection is confused. It does not warrant treating every detail of the old accusation as settled history.
The attempt is also disrupted from outside. During Carl's incapacitation, Stockade arranges a precisely timed invitation to parlay. Shi Maria accepts it while she can act through him, and the resulting teleport divides Carl between the infirmary and a Lemig ballroom. The plan, as later explained at the parlay, was to draw Carl away while leaving Shi Maria at the Princess Posse base. Instead she manifests amid the Lemig soldiers and kills several of them. Officials dispute whether a different teleport method would have achieved Stockade's intended result. Mordecai, aware that the procedure is being observed, changes his preparation to an expulsion potion, adding another intervention to an already unstable event.
Carl comes away believing Shi Maria has been confined rather than destroyed. He can still sense the power of the eye, and he regards the trapped presence as something he might release himself. Later, after a crisis at Khepri's temple, she again speaks inside his mind and urges him to free her, offering to save him. Her voice also reaches him amid the mounting pressures of Faction Wars. These later appeals establish that confinement has reduced her freedom without silencing her or resolving their conflict. The spider who once needed Carl to carry a card now waits behind an eye on his chest for him to open the boundary he has struggled to keep closed.
