Overview
Chapter 4 is the first major action test of the Third Floor. It confirms that the ruins are filled with ambush predators, stealthy mobs, and quest content that can pull crawlers into larger set pieces. Carl's new build begins to show utility through bombs, Fear, and unarmed attacks, while Donut's missiles and Mongo's aggression help them survive the chase. The chapter also shows the downside of the Manager Benefit when Mordecai's new access yanks him into a saferoom while he is intoxicated.
Plot Summary
- The chapter opens with Carl's enormous viewer metrics and the group traveling through the ruins while Donut trains Mongo to obey commands.
- Zev contacts Carl and Donut, reporting that Odette's show performed well and that viewers are reacting positively to the party's unusual race and class choices.
- A knife thrown by a Former Circus Lemur starts an ambush from an upper window, revealing a stealthy circus-themed mob group.
- The system opens the Quests tab and assigns The Show Must Go On, a quest centered on discovering and ending the remains of an ancient circus.
- Carl tries to contact Mordecai for guidance, but Mordecai is already too drunk to help through chat.
- Carl uses a boom jug against the lemur position, setting the building on fire and killing multiple lemurs, but more mobs join the chase.
- The group sees lemurs riding or launching from a giraffe-like circus animal and flees through alleys toward a saferoom.
- A Terror the Clown blocks the route, and Donut, Mongo, and Carl bring it down quickly enough to loot it before the pursuing lemurs arrive.
- Carl, Donut, and Mongo reach the Belly-Rubbed Pug saferoom and meet the Bopca protector Gordo.
- Mordecai teleports into the saferoom in an embarrassing drunken state, vomits, and passes out, causing Gordo to question the party's survival chances.
