Zev is a kua-tin communications employee and dungeon administrator who becomes the principal contact between Carl, Princess Donut, and the organizations producing their public appearances. Borant Corporation first assigns her to the pair after their rising audience numbers generate more interview requests than its ordinary booking system can handle. Her job requires her to sell their survival as entertainment, but her exposure to them also draws her into a friendship with Donut and a guarded alliance with Carl. Political pressure within Borant, the System AI's scrutiny, and changes in control of the crawl repeatedly limit what she can say or do. By the Ninth Floor, she remains a working liaison while giving the crawlers warnings that her superiors do not necessarily want them to have.
Assignment and first meeting
Zev first appears to Carl and Donut in a Second Floor safe room. Carl's interface identifies her as a Borant assistant communications representative and a dungeon admin. She is about two feet tall and wears a water-filled helmet connected to a bulky breathing apparatus. The suit lets her enter a dungeon environment built for other species, and its conspicuous armor also reflects the danger of appearing in person near crawlers. Her arrival shuts off the cameras while she speaks with the party.
She explains that Borant has placed Carl and Donut in its Crawler Assisted Outreach Program. Their latest boss battle has produced more than two dozen requests from outside shows. Rather than let those requests go through automatically, Borant will route them through Zev, who can message the pair, arrange appearances, and debrief them afterward. Donut immediately understands the assignment as a chance to become a performer. Carl asks whether he and Donut can decline interviews. Zev says she will ask before transporting them, but Odette already holds a contractual claim on their floor-opening appearances, and the pair must accept another show during the floor. Her promise of a choice concerns the particular booking, not freedom from the broadcast obligation.
Zev proposes timing a large boss fight near the end of the floor to sustain audience interest. Carl angrily rejects the suggestion. He tells her that he and Donut are captives fighting to live, not voluntary entertainers whose combat can be scheduled for a ratings peak. Zev answers by describing her own lack of freedom: her superior's political connections mean that a mistake could bring punishment on her family. This exchange does not erase the difference between crawler and employee, but it establishes that Zev has reasons to fear the people above her. Her working interest in keeping the pair alive exists alongside that personal vulnerability.
Donut and Zev quickly find a subject on which they agree: Earth television. Donut's interest in shows and celebrity gives Zev a way to talk to her beyond bookings. Their easy conversation contrasts with Carl's suspicion of Borant. It becomes an enduring part of Zev's connection to the team, continuing even when the official communications channel is constrained.
Audience management and her first suspension
Zev watches Carl and Donut's conduct closely and passes on audience reactions. During their work with the elderly crawlers of Team Meadow Lark, she asks Carl to repeat a compassionate statement because he coughed during its first delivery. He refuses to stage the moment again. She also reports that a portion of the audience considers the rescue a waste of time. Her feedback makes clear that she is monitoring the party as a producer would, while Carl continues to treat the people they help as more than a storyline.
That monitoring soon has a different use. Zev warns Carl and Donut about an approaching rage elemental and directs them toward safety. The System AI treats the warning as possible cheating and suspends her. On appeal, the decision is reversed because Carl had already noticed the event that heralded the attack. Zev returns to debrief the pair, but the reversal does not remove her concern: the AI has singled her out for attention. Mukta acts as substitute during her absence and changes their scheduled appearance to Death Watch Extreme, where the Maestro mistreats Carl. Zev apologizes for the booking when she returns, explaining that it was Mukta's choice rather than the program she had arranged. The incident shows both the value of her judgment and how readily another administrator can exercise power over her clients when she is removed.
Zev continues to measure what will attract viewers. She welcomes the party's strong Second Floor numbers, likes the response to Donut's new pet Mongo, and urges Carl to favor explosive attacks over slingshot practice because the former play better on the feed. Carl ignores that advice and trains with the slingshot. Their exchanges settle into a pattern: Zev supplies information about the audience and the obligations imposed on the party, while Carl decides how much of her entertainment advice to use.
A channel to outside productions
On the Third Floor, Zev's position as an intermediary gives Carl a way to reach the people who control an elite storyline. During the Grimaldi circus crisis, he asks her to contact the producers of Vengeance of the Daughter while he is in the middle of his plan. He has poisoned Grimaldi and believes the show's creators are waiting for the conflict to produce a dramatic outcome, possibly at his expense. Carl offers future participation in their Sixth Floor storyline if they accept his terms now. Zev initially objects that this is different from what they discussed, but her superior has connected the producers to the conversation. Once they agree, Carl insists that Zev, as his agent, make the bargain official. She is a conduit for a negotiation that could not take place through combat alone.
The work remains heavily concerned with promotion. Zev reports how Odette's show and the pair's class and race choices have been received, arranges a later appearance on Danger Zone with Ripper Wonton, and prefers the party to be in a safe room when a transfer is due. Donut shares with Carl a plan she and Zev have discussed for writing an intergalactic version of an Earth television series after the crawl. For Donut, the conversations imagine a life beyond compulsory appearances; for Zev, they reveal an interest in Earth's fiction that is separate from Borant's immediate audience calculations.
On the Fourth Floor, Zev criticizes Katia's reception with viewers and presses Carl and Donut to make her more entertaining or remove her from the visible team. Carl refuses to discard a companion for weak audience numbers. Zev also books appearances that may exclude Katia even when Katia has become important to the party's survival. Their dispute identifies a persistent limit to Zev's advocacy: she may care about the crawlers, but her job still measures them as performers. Later, when Zev visits the team in person, she explains that Katia's appearance arrangements have changed and that the party's publicity now involves additional contractual terms. Her information matters because those terms affect who may leave the dungeon for a show and who remains exposed inside it.
Removal, reeducation, and restricted return
At the end of the Fourth Floor, Zev disappears from her regular role. Loita, another kua-tin representative, tells Carl and Donut that Zev has suffered a personal tragedy at home and has been sent to a reeducation retreat. Loita assumes primary control of the party's publicity. Donut is furious and wants to challenge her. Carl stops her because an attack on an administrator would not help Zev and could bring immediate punishment on the crawlers. Their reaction is evidence that Zev has become more than an interchangeable Borant contact to them.
On the Fifth Floor, Zev contacts the party again, but she sounds unlike her former self. She uses formal, flat language and says she is now only their social-media manager; Loita handles public appearances. Donut cannot simply contact her whenever she wishes. After Donut acquires a social-media board, Loita declares that the party no longer needs Zev to interpret its audience response. Zev says she will remain Loita's assistant behind the scenes. Donut regrets that obtaining the board has cut off her conversations with Zev and does not even get to say goodbye in person. Carl and Donut notice the change in Zev's speech, yet Donut continues to greet her warmly. The circumstances of Zev's treatment are initially obscured by Loita's euphemisms, so her new manner should not be mistaken for a voluntary change of loyalty.
Even within those restrictions, Zev passes useful details. She tells the party that legal efforts to block their plan against Ninth Floor faction resources have failed. When Carl's attack threatens the sponsors' preparations, she delivers a formal warning from Borant's new political controllers: they approve of the immediate result but object to similar disruptions in the future. Carl understands the contradiction. Borant benefits when rival sponsors lose money, even while it wants to retain authority over the game. Zev's message gives him a view of that conflict from inside the production side. Her apparently official communications can carry information the party needs without an open declaration that she is helping them.
Work under Valtay control
By the Sixth Floor, Zev is again handling Carl and Donut's appearances under a changed production regime. She alerts them to scheduling and security procedures, including the checkpoint before a visit to Odette's show. At the production facility Carl sees her without the full armored diving suit, wearing a smaller rebreather. Donut greets her physically, pressing against her as soon as they meet. Zev appears worn and frightened, a visible difference from the enthusiastic agent who first talked to Donut about television.
Before Odette's program, Zev helps explain the revelation that Beatrice survived the Collapse. She says she learned of it only moments before the party and discloses that Odette's arrangement concerning Beatrice is also being used in negotiations with Borant. The information shocks both Carl and Donut. Zev cannot control Odette's decision to raise it, but she tries to tell the crawlers what the outside parties are doing with someone from their former life. When she cannot safely explain a further danger, she urges Carl to concentrate on Donut's needs. Her warning relies on his trust rather than on a full account of what she knows.
Later, Carl is removed from the Hunting Grounds while Donut remains below. Zev meets him at a production facility and uses his scheduled CrawlCon obligations to keep him away longer than he wants. He worries about Donut and asks to return at once. Zev avoids stating every reason for the delay, but she directs him to rest and train before his return; Carl comes to understand that an ambush may be waiting for him. She also tells him that the kua-tin home system has gone dark and that employees who stayed after the change in power fear being treated as traitors. Her family, she says, was killed because she refused to wear the Bloom's pin. The threat she raised at their first meeting has become a personal loss rather than a hypothetical warning.
Immediately before Carl returns to danger, he asks Zev to watch over Donut if he dies. She promises to do her best. The request gives her responsibility that no booking contract could supply: Carl trusts her to care for Donut even though she still works within the apparatus that controls the crawl. Zev later tells him that children and pregnant crawlers who have been marked ineligible have escaped to the surface kinder facility, relieving his fear that their disappearance meant they had been killed.
Limits of administrative knowledge
Zev remains an information source on the Eighth Floor, although she does not claim to understand every failure in the production system. She tells the party when administrators are locked out of their controls even while the crawlers' own menus appear normal. When a glitch alters Carl and Donut's available destinations, she apologizes and says the change was not intentional on her side. Those statements distinguish her access to the production board from command over the System AI.
She also stays present during media encounters that have become more openly adversarial. When Harbinger interrupts an interview and removes participants, Zev protests his action. As Carl prepares for an uncertain encounter involving a Residual, she tells him that his sponsor and the associated organization have disappeared after sending him a box. She admits that she does not know exactly what he will face. Her warnings have practical weight precisely because she sometimes acknowledges when the administrators are as surprised as the crawlers.
Faction Wars and the Ninth Floor
During Faction Wars, Zev still manages ordinary production matters, including licensing and compulsory broadcasts. Donut complains to her about unauthorized-looking merchandise and learns that the seller has paid for the license. Zev explains that a crawler's right to revenue depends on thresholds and later-floor terms that Donut has not yet reached. The conversation preserves Zev's commercial role even after she has become a trusted personal contact.
The Ninth Floor also brings orders that Zev cannot explain. When Agatha appears near Carl, Zev relays a direct instruction from Prime Minister Glory, through the Syndicate council, that Carl must not interact with her. She says the liaisons are still negotiating with the System AI but admits she does not know why the prohibition has been imposed. Carl presses her about earlier claims that Residuals were harmless. Zev cannot reconcile those claims with the new command. She passes the order without pretending that she possesses its underlying rationale.
Zev provides a much graver warning after Lucia Mar's dog dies. The administrators had believed Lucia's unusual connection to children in the surface kinder facility could be corrected. New information makes them fear that Lucia's death might instead kill approximately 120,000 children linked to her. Zev tells Carl both the scale of the risk and the uncertainty surrounding it. Carl, horrified that he nearly killed Lucia, demands that the liaisons keep her safe. Zev says the decision is outside her control. The exchange defines the reach of her alliance with him: she can transmit urgent knowledge, but she cannot guarantee what other authorities will do with it.
As fighting spreads to ships in orbit, Zev tells Carl that an apparent ejection request did not originate with the production team. She reports missile and maser attacks between warships and a Syndicate order to destroy headquarters, while Valtay leadership orders the staff not to comply. She urges Carl to make his accusation quickly while he can still speak to the audience. The competing commands leave her relaying events as they unfold rather than managing a controlled program. She continues to communicate with Carl at a moment when the machinery that once made his life a broadcast is itself under attack.
