Gravy Boat, also called Ferdinand and later styled Warlord on High, Sir Ferdinand, is an orange-and-yellow tomcat from Earth. Before the collapse, he belongs to Marjory Williams, a neighbor in the same apartment building as Princess Donut and Beatrice. Donut remembers him as a secret romantic attachment and refuses to accept his domestic name, while Carl knows him as a roaming outdoor cat who repeatedly appeared outside the apartment window. After surviving the collapse on the surface, Gravy Boat is drawn into the dungeon's manufactured story around Donut. He reappears on the Sixth Floor as Sir Ferdinand, a level 100 province boss and Queen Imogen's familiar, and later becomes Juice Box's co-warlord on Team Retribution.
The names mark changes in status rather than separate characters. Gravy Boat is the name used by Marjory and Carl; Ferdinand is the name first imposed on him by Beatrice and preferred by Donut; Sir Ferdinand is his High Elf title; and Warlord on High is his self-selected political style. Even after acquiring speech, levels, equipment, and governmental authority, he reacts angrily when Chaco calls him Gravy Boat. His elevated dungeon identity therefore preserves the same vanity that Donut had already attributed to the ordinary cat.
The cat outside Donut's window
Donut mentions Ferdinand before Carl knows who the name refers to. On the First Floor, she contrasts magical attacks with the messiness of fighting like an ordinary house cat and says she would end up looking like Ferdinand. When Carl asks for an explanation, she evades him. She invokes Ferdinand again while pretending to be near death and lists him alongside Beatrice among those she loves. These remarks establish that he mattered to Donut before the dungeon, although Carl does not yet know his identity.
The explanation comes during a public interview on the Third Floor. Asked directly who Ferdinand is, Donut describes a forbidden romance between a pedigreed princess and a non-pedigreed “moggie.” In her account, he visited her at night, the authorities hunted him, and she once jumped from a window in an attempt to reach him. Her presentation turns a neighborhood tomcat into a star-crossed lover and treats their separation as a question of social class.
Carl supplies the less romantic version. The cat's name is Gravy Boat, and he belongs to Marjory on the first floor of their building. He roams the neighborhood, fathers litters with numerous female cats, and sits in a tree outside the window when Donut is in heat. Beatrice calls animal control twice, but the cat evades capture. She also has a loud argument with Marjory about him, although Carl never learns exactly why Beatrice is so invested in the dispute. Donut's insistence that the cat “preferred” Ferdinand is not supported by anything the unspeaking Earth animal could have told her. It reflects Donut's tendency to recast her life in aristocratic and romantic terms.
Beatrice is the source of the alternate name. Before learning what Marjory called the cat, she would order “Ferdinand” away from the window as he yowled and scratched to get inside. Donut, contrary to the later romance she narrates for an audience, would hiss and spit at him through the glass. The contradiction is characteristic of their relationship: Donut converts an unwanted neighborhood visitor into an idealized first love, while Beatrice's hostility to him is entangled with her protectiveness and possessiveness toward Donut.
Survival on the surface
Gravy Boat survives the collapse outside the dungeon. His survival makes him valuable to the crawl's entertainment apparatus because he can be used to connect Beatrice's surface story to Donut's dungeon narrative. In the epilogue to The Gate of the Feral Gods, two alien walk-on trackers search for him by name. Their scan finds a cat inside a human camp, and they decide to enter despite the number of survivors because capturing an A-tier target would earn them a bonus. Their interest is not animal rescue; Gravy Boat is a story asset whose connection to Donut gives him commercial value.
Before the trackers enter the camp, Beatrice and Brad encounter the cat outdoors. He is thin but mobile, descends from a tree, and rubs against them. Beatrice immediately recognizes him as Ferdinand, then explains to Brad that he is Marjory's cat Gravy Boat. She brings him back despite his half-feral behavior. Her treatment of him alternates between affection, regret, and compulsion. She holds him until he scratches free, accumulates cuts from trying to restrain him, and apologizes at night for not letting him through the window before the collapse. The cat eventually settles beside her, but he does not become docile.
The trackers' intrusion ends without the intended capture. When armed aliens cut into Beatrice and Brad's tent, one attacker is shot through the chest before firing. In the confusion, Gravy Boat bolts between the remaining alien's legs and disappears into the camp at night. His escape continues the pattern Carl described before the collapse: people attempt to confine or collect him, and he avoids them. It also prevents the trackers from securing their named target at that moment.
The next step in his journey remains undisclosed. It is not known who later takes him, when he enters the dungeon's systems, or how much of his original memory survives. His Sixth Floor return is not the arrival of an unchanged pet: he has been assigned a role, given speech and powers, and embedded in the High Elf conflict.
Sir Ferdinand of the High Elves
Gravy Boat returns on the Sixth Floor as Queen Imogen's familiar. Donut first recognizes him when a curtain briefly reveals the force attacking Mongo. She is shaken and concludes that the producers have brought Ferdinand into the dungeon, altered his memories, and made him hostile so that she will eventually have to fight him. Her belief identifies the cat, but the precise extent of any memory alteration is not independently explained.
His hostility has immediate consequences. Ferdinand attacks Mongo with a lightning bolt; Carl intercepts it, preventing the strike from killing Donut's pet. Queen Imogen later acknowledges that her cat nearly killed Carl's cat but says she did not order the attack and has chastened Ferdinand. Elsewhere, Ferdinand and the elves kill one of the remaining Odious Creepers, demonstrating that his boss designation is not merely ceremonial.
The High Elf court calls him Sir Ferdinand, although an elf explains that “Sir” is only part of the pet's name rather than a genuine knighthood. He is usually found on Queen Imogen's shoulder or ranging from her castle to hunt. His system description identifies him as a cat, Queen Imogen's familiar, a level 100 province boss, and a creature occupying a dangerous place in High Elf society. High Elf rulers have a history of destroying favored species after tiring of individual pets; Ferdinand remains alive because Imogen still values him, but her attachment resembles ownership of a useful weapon more than affection between equals.
Ferdinand adopts the display and privileges of the court enthusiastically. He rides Simoom, an albino rhinoceros fitted with an ornate howdah, and wears an enormous gold turban with a long white feather. He regards the turban as proof that he is the most handsome cat in the castle. During the masquerade, the interconnected ballroom magic allows him to project himself into the crawlers' party while his physical location remains with the queen. The arrangement makes him difficult to touch while still allowing him to threaten others.
Carl's group plans to turn Ferdinand against Imogen rather than kill him. Donut can enchant animals through personality alone, but a charm-animal potion would make Ferdinand her actual minion, granting saferoom access, chat, and stronger obedience. Because charm depends on statistics rather than comparative level, Donut's charisma gives the plan a chance even against a level 100 boss. Ferdinand's attraction to her makes the operation easier: before the spell is fully relevant, he abandons formal court speech, boasts to Donut, and tries to leave the queen's ballroom to be near her.
The plan culminates during Donut's performance and the destruction of the party. Ferdinand calls Donut his bride and teleports to defend her. When Queen Imogen attacks Carl, the orange cat slams into her head and breaks her control long enough for Carl to recover. Imogen backhands Ferdinand hard enough to send him flying, after which he disappears from the immediate fight. His intervention does not defeat the queen by itself, but it turns a character introduced as a threat to Mongo into a combatant acting on Donut's behalf.
From familiar to co-warlord
Ferdinand's new political role is announced at the end of the Eighth Floor. An audience vote creates Team Retribution as the Faction Wars home team based in Larracos, with Juice Box and Sir Ferdinand assigned as its co-warlords. The announcement labels both of them NPCs, but the Ninth Floor later reveals why Ferdinand is indispensable to the arrangement. Juice Box explains that he is not truly an NPC in the relevant system sense; as an Earth animal, he is of the same stock as the crawlers. His presence is the workaround that permits Team Retribution to participate and gives the team access to the controlling and city-defense systems that Juice Box cannot use directly. If he dies, the team loses that control.
Ferdinand is poorly suited to careful administration. At the beginning of Faction Wars, Donut names a truce “The Good Guys,” and he immediately renames it “Ferdinand and his Bird.” He styles himself Warlord on High, claims that Donut is his fiancée, and leaves his adjutant Drick trying to teach him how to operate the warlord menus. Juice Box resents that the system has placed authority over her people and defenses in his paws, but she must protect him because the team's participation depends on his survival.
He also becomes mayor of Shanty Town after a succession of mayors are killed. Carl exploits Ferdinand's concern with clothes and status to obtain the town. He offers a temporary black bowler hat in exchange for Ferdinand transferring the mayorship, along with a promise to return the cat's turban and try to recover Simoom. Ferdinand accepts after admiring himself in a mirror, demonstrating that vanity can accomplish what political persuasion might not. The Princess Posse subsequently retains the rhinoceros for much of the war while the High Elf castle remains flooded; Donut rides Simoom even though Ferdinand wants his mount back.
Despite his incompetence, Ferdinand's access can be strategically useful. At Juice Box's prompting, he submits an emergency action item barring everyone inside the dungeon from watching outside feeds for the rest of Faction Wars. The system approves the live-feed blackout. He later presents another confused proposal on Juice Box's behalf concerning summoned deities and outworlder control. The system divides it into separate requests, rejecting the change to deity-summoning rules but approving the part that changes how Ascendency players are compelled to pilot sponsored gods. These actions show the division within Team Retribution: Juice Box supplies the objective, while Ferdinand's crawler-compatible status gives the NPC faction a voice in the warlord system.
Relationship with Donut
Ferdinand's pursuit of Donut remains boastful, sexual, and largely one-sided. Donut once called him the love of her life, but that claim belonged to her romanticized memory of Earth. When she learns he is telling others they are engaged, she rejects the claim and angrily messages him. She continues to call him Ferdinand rather than Gravy Boat and is sensitive to his danger, yet she does not accept the relationship on his terms.
His conduct repeatedly undercuts his declarations. He calls Donut “Kitten” or “babe,” treats a marriage as settled without her consent, and brags about other prospective partners. Donut describes him as disgusting when, near the end of the Ninth Floor, he proposes a final sexual encounter before transferring away. At the same time, his loyalty is not wholly invented. During the crisis at the tower, he arrives with Juice Box and other Team Retribution officers while Donut is endangered. Donut later thanks him for trying to save her, and he answers without treating the rescue as an obligation imposed by his title.
Ferdinand survives the fall of Team Retribution on the Ninth Floor. The plan for ending Faction Wars transfers him and Juice Box to the Twelfth Floor with Larracos and Shanty Town, while the Princess Posse claims victory. In his final confirmed appearance, he still wears the bowler hat that Carl used in the mayorship trade, even though his drained turban has been returned to his inventory. He tells Donut he will see her on the Twelfth Floor and walks away carrying the hat in his mouth. The ordinary tomcat who once evaded animal control has become a level 100 political actor, but his attachment to Donut, territorial confidence, and resistance to anyone else's chosen name remain recognizably continuous with Gravy Boat's life on Earth.
