Tsarina Signet is a half-Naiad, half-High Elf summoner whose living tattoos become blood-and-ink elementals. An elite of level 60 when Carl first encounters her, she is the daughter of the former High Elf king Finian and the Naiad Princess Lunette. Her struggle begins with the loss of her circus family on the Third Floor and continues on the Sixth Floor, where she fights the Naiad Confederacy and her half-sister, Queen Imogen. Signet dies during the Butcher's Masquerade after using her own blood as a sacrifice. Her act breaks the ballroom's protective seal and gives her tattooed companions independent forms; Imogen survives it and is killed later in the ensuing battle.

Exile and the circus

Signet's parents belonged to rival powers in the Hunting Grounds. Finian ruled the High Elves, while Lunette had been a princess among the Naiads. Signet tells Carl that her mother taught her grace and hereditary magic and cared for her despite the hostility surrounding their family. A revolution ended Lunette's royal position and eventually cost her life. Signet was cast out of the river, and Finian exiled her from the Hunting Grounds. Her mixed ancestry made her vulnerable in both realms: the High Elves rejected the king's children of other species, while the Naiad Confederacy was hostile to outsiders.

Redstone Grimaldi rescued Signet when she was young and brought her into his traveling circus. Its performers became another family for her, and Grimaldi later became her lover. The title “Tsarina” came from a conversation with him. Signet explained that her mother's displaced royal line would have made her a tsarina had she been full-blooded; Grimaldi then gave her the stage name Tsarina Signet. The name preserved a connection to Lunette even after Signet had lost any practical place in the Naiad court.

Scolopendra's catastrophe destroyed the circus's former life. Grimaldi became a Pestiferous Vine centered under the big top. The performers were infected by its mold and parasites, which made them obey him and regenerate after death. Signet escaped that control, but remained nearby. She saw the performers as her brothers and sisters, rather than as disposable monsters, and repeatedly tried to reach the tent. Grimaldi's defenses treated her as a traitor: when Carl and Donut arrive, a circus poster advertising Signet's battle squad has been marked as wanted. The sign records the rupture between Signet and the people she still regards as family.

The Third Floor confrontation

Signet first approaches Carl and Princess Donut outside the circus after they survive an attack by its creatures. Carl's inspection identifies her as a level-60 elite summoner. Her map marker is white, yet neither Carl nor Donut takes that as proof of safety. Signet draws six mold lions toward them while preparing a summoning. Carl uses Protective Shell and Donut's Confusing Fog to survive the attack; Mongo and Donut help kill the lions. Signet's proposed blood sacrifice fails because the lions do not cut Carl. She later admits that even a wound would have drawn all of his blood into her spell and animated her battle squad. This is the first clear indication that her wish to rescue the circus can place strangers in mortal danger.

Signet asks Carl to help assault the big top. When he fails to return as promised, she follows him, puts Donut under her inherited Water Lily spell, and confines Mongo. She explains that Donut will sleep until Signet releases her and would die if Signet died first. Carl therefore has to undertake the attack without Donut. Signet frames this as a chance to honor his promise, but the spell makes their cooperation coercive. Her devotion to Grimaldi and the performers does not erase the harm she is willing to inflict to reach them.

For the assault, Signet obtains blood from the circus bear Heather after Carl defeats her. The sacrifice lets her draw her full retinue from the tattoos, though she trades away their duration for greater strength. The resulting elementals include a three-headed ogre, a sea serpent, sharks, and other creatures. They look like flat drawings even while moving and fighting in the streets. The ogre Carl inspects is identified as a blood-and-ink elemental and a summoned minion of Signet. The squad pushes through the circus defenses while Carl enters the tent, where Grimaldi's vine controls the infected performers.

Carl initially considers killing Grimaldi, then realizes the vine has preserved a protective attachment to Signet and the circus family. After Carl is infected, Grimaldi can communicate through him. Signet speaks to the ringmaster as Redstone and argues that keeping the performers in a cycle of violence is not saving them. Carl urges him to let them go. Grimaldi relents and unbanishes Signet, allowing her to enter the tent. She tells Carl that Donut will wake at sunrise, and she keeps that promise. Signet does not return to Carl that night. Their agreement resolves the immediate threat to Donut, while Signet's larger conflict with her birth family remains ahead of her.

Return to the Hunting Grounds

Signet meets Carl and Donut again on the Sixth Floor. She is still level 60, but now has allies from communities persecuted by the High Elves and threatened by hunters. Among them are Areson the Wise, a powerful ogre, and six Chee children whom Imogen transformed into were-castors. Their former teacher, Miss Nadine, was changed into a giant caterpillar. Signet explains that Imogen carried out the transformation while Finian still ruled, then sent forces after the survivors. Signet's campaign against the High Elves thus includes people whose lives Imogen damaged long before the current floor's events.

Signet also wants to reclaim Lunette's castle from the Naiad Confederacy. She describes its rulers as part of the same struggle as the High Elves, though Carl's summary of simple revenge does not capture all her aims. She gathers scouts and fighters, watches for off-world hunters, and proposes cooperation with Carl rather than repeating the hostage tactic she used on the Third Floor. Areson and the other allies help protect their camp and search the surrounding territory. When hunters appear, Signet's group can fight them, but Carl warns that capturing such opponents carries risks.

The raid on Fort Freedom uses the different abilities of Signet's coalition. A diversion draws the castle guards toward one entrance while her amphibious force approaches from the river. Her blood-and-ink squad crosses with them; one of its eels carries fighters over the water. Signet reaches the throne room and takes the castle, only to find a failing Confederacy and a palace in poor condition. She acknowledges that liberating the site has not restored its people or created a workable government. She does not intend to rule them herself while under her curse. The first part of the Vengeance of the Daughter quest ends with the castle reclaimed, and its second part names Imogen as the remaining target.

The assault also costs Signet two close companions. Clint dies during the fighting, and Miss Nadine is killed near the river. Signet asks Edgar, an elderly tortoise and tattoo artist, whether enough moonlight remains to preserve Nadine. He uses a needle-like instrument and material from Nadine's remains to place a new moving tattoo on Signet's thigh. Signet says the image is an elemental made from remains and her memories, a loving likeness rather than Nadine restored to life. A younger image of Clint appears beside it because Nadine's memory of her pupil was carried into the tattoo. For the surviving were-castors, the figures offer a visible remembrance of two losses, even though Signet refuses to call them the original people.

Tattoos, memory, and family

The tattoo of Nadine reveals why Signet's summoning is more personal than the appearance of a monster army suggests. She received her first tattoo on the night Lunette died, when she met Edgar. Her mother's image remained with her afterward. The three-headed ogre tattoo has a different history: it represents Di-we, who died protecting Signet from her sister's agents. Di-we's three heads produced three new ogres after his death, including Areson. Signet distinguishes the living descendants from the tattoo of their progenitor. Apollon traveled to the Over City and worked with the circus; Areson stayed in the Hunting Grounds, while Herman went to Larracos.

Each image therefore records a particular relationship, but the elementals do not all have the same origin or identity. Some preserve someone Signet knew and lost; Nadine's image also carries a person Nadine remembered. The elementals can move on Signet's skin, react to events around them, and become formidable summoned fighters when blood powers the spell. Their normal duration is limited. Signet's account of Nadine makes the boundary clear: resemblance and remembered behavior do not by themselves make an elemental the dead person returned. That distinction becomes important when the last use of her magic produces forms unlike her earlier temporary summons.

Signet's Naiad ancestry also brings Samantha to her. Samantha claims a family connection and initially insists Signet can restore her body by giving up her own. When the proposed transfer would kill Signet, she refuses, though Samantha continues to demand help. Their encounter places a second claim on Signet's life beside her revenge campaign. At the Masquerade, Signet's final request to Carl concerns a remaining body and the search for a pulpmancer, leaving Samantha's problem to others after Signet is gone.

The Butcher's Masquerade

As Imogen's party approaches, Signet expects to attack her half-sister at the High Elf castle. Carl warns that the plan is a trap and urges patience. He arranges for Signet to enter by a lower route and wait for an opening, while a changeling impersonates her elsewhere. A sudden invitation brings the real Signet into the ballroom before his timing is ready. Imogen recognizes her immediately and insults her Naiad ancestry. The ballroom's peace seal prevents a direct fight while the event continues, trapping both sisters in proximity without permitting Signet to strike.

Signet spends time with the outside judges and learns more about the people who watch and shape the dungeon's events. She is shaken by their claim that Lunette and the companions preserved on her skin were never real beyond the constructed world. Carl had tried to explain the forces controlling events to her, but this conversation makes the claim immediate and personal. She rejects the implication that her memories and obligations have no value. She also understands that Carl is preparing to break the seal himself, at great cost, while mantises threaten people inside and outside the castle.

Signet chooses her own sacrifice. She asks Carl to have Donut use moonlight as the source of a powerful Torch spell, which strengthens the effect she intends for her family. As Donut's performance holds the ballroom's attention, Signet asks Carl for a knife. She tells him to protect his family and watch over hers, then cuts her own throat beside Imogen. The peace seal breaks, Signet is pulled into the Nothing, and her blood and tattoos remain behind as the room erupts into battle. Her last words to Carl establish the act as her choice, rather than an attack ordered by him or a direct killing blow against Imogen.

The released tattoos become more than the short-lived flat creatures Carl saw at the circus. Di-we appears as a memory golem; Nadine and the child Clint take independent forms, and a figure resembling Lunette appears as an incomplete flesh golem. Nadine tells Carl that Signet gave them life and asks him to take Lunette's golem and find a pulpmancer to help Samantha. Carl retrieves the inert figure. The released warriors cannot directly harm Imogen, who survives Signet's sacrifice and continues fighting. Other combatants finally bring the queen down during the broader battle, and the Vengeance of the Daughter quest completes. Signet does not return with the figures she freed.
