Damascus Steel is a level 75 ifrit, the assistant lead dancer at the Penis Parade, and an associate of the Guild of Suffering within the Desperado Club. He is the son of Astrid and Hamed, who is also known as the Night Wyrm, and the brother of Anaconda. Although his public role is that of an entertainer, Damascus covertly controls access to the Guild's hidden rooms and later uses his knowledge of the club's mercenary arrangements to save its displaced performers.
Damascus's story is bound to the conflict within his family. Hamed gives Carl and Katia a Guild quest that results in Astrid's death, while Damascus believes his father arranged the killing to inherit what Astrid controlled. He responds by securing an escape for the dancers Astrid had protected and then accompanying Anaconda into the Guild's hidden area to confront Hamed. During Faction Wars, Princess Donut briefly sees Damascus alive, but he evades her and subsequently cannot be found. His allegiance and location remain unresolved at the end of the finalized seventh novel.
Appearance and dungeon identity
Carl first examines Damascus on the Eighth Floor. The dungeon identifies him as a level 75 ifrit and assistant lead dancer rather than a former crawler. Damascus later explicitly says that neither he nor Anaconda was ever a crawler. The brothers are nonetheless related despite having visibly different dungeon bodies: Damascus is classified as an ifrit, while Anaconda is a quarter naga. Their differing species become one of the details that leads Carl to suspect that their displayed forms are roles imposed by the dungeon rather than a record of how they were born.
Damascus appears as a large, muscular humanoid with pointed ears, short goat-like horns, closely cropped hair, and completely white eyes. Smoke rises continually from his skin, hair, and eye sockets, and the edges of his body seem indistinct, as though he is shifting in and out of focus. His skin looks approximately human but feels like solid metal. During the crisis after Astrid's death, he grips Carl's arm with enough force to feel like an iron clamp. The dungeon's description warns Carl that fighting him would be dangerous, but the novels do not show Damascus using a named spell or engaging in a full combat scene.
Old scars and faded tattoos cover his upper body. The most prominent design on his chest is an anatomical heart between spread demonic wings, crossed by old red welts that resemble claw marks. A spiderweb tattoo on his left elbow matches Carl's mark from the Night Wyrm's ring and identifies their shared access to the Guild of Suffering. Damascus notices Carl's elbow mark immediately when they meet, then also studies the Enemy of the Church tattoo on Carl's other arm. The exchange establishes that he is assessing Carl's connections before trusting him with the entrance behind the club.
At work, Damascus wears an open embroidered vest and wide, flowing trousers. He has a gravelly voice and is older and more reserved than the exaggerated acts surrounding him. Carl initially finds him sitting apart from the crowd with a book and a steaming drink, waiting for his later performance rather than seeking attention. This quiet introduction contrasts with the highly theatrical persona he adopts when guiding Carl past the customers. Damascus bows to the room, plays along with its innuendo, and ushers Carl into a private cubicle without exposing why they are really leaving the floor.
The hidden Guild entrance
Damascus is known to Princess Donut before Carl meets him directly. Donut enthusiastically includes him among her favorite Penis Parade performers, tells Carl that Damascus wants to meet him, and jokingly declares Damascus to be Mongo's new father. Her familiarity does not include his clandestine work. When Katia reveals that the Penis Parade conceals a Guild of Suffering entrance, Donut is offended that Damascus never told her. His silence is consistent with the entrance's function: the strip club is a public front, while access to the Guild and its assassination quests is restricted.
Carl seeks Damascus after Katia has already entered the Guild and accepted the quest she needs to remove the Crown of the Sepsis Whore. Damascus recognizes the connection at once. He leaves his book and drink, takes Carl through the occupied club, and uses the appearance of a private dance to conceal their movement. Inside the last cubicle, he locks the public door and opens a hidden portal into a hot brick corridor marked with spiderweb imagery. The system then recognizes Carl as a member entering the Guild's main room.
Damascus does not enter the Night Wyrm's chamber with Carl or explain the assassination assignment. He points Carl toward the inner door and waits in the corridor, keeping his own participation limited to authentication and concealment. When Carl pauses over a lengthy system message, Damascus tells him to stop delaying, complete the visit, and return quickly because Damascus has a reputation to maintain. Afterward, he makes Carl limp while leaving the cubicle so the club's patrons will interpret the meeting as an ordinary paid encounter. Katia reports that Damascus used a milder version of the same cover with her, requiring her to disarrange her hair.
This episode shows the two sides of Damascus's position working together. His employment gives him a credible reason to take visitors into private rooms, while his Guild affiliation lets him identify marked initiates and admit them through the secret passage. He is not merely stationed near the entrance; he actively protects its disguise. At the same time, he withholds information even from Donut and does not warn Carl that the quest beyond the door is entangled with his own family.
Astrid's death and the dancers' evacuation
Damascus and Anaconda learn of Astrid's death while the Desperado Club is being torn apart by the demon Minge and the creatures released below it. Carl finds both brothers openly weeping in the crowded Penis Parade. The usually stoic Damascus sits on the floor with his face in his hands, and his heated tears sizzle when they strike the ground. Other performers gather around the brothers: Splash Zone comforts Anaconda, while Dong Quixote attempts to bring Damascus water. The response confirms a personal bond with Astrid before Carl knows that she was their mother.
Once Damascus rises, his first demand is not retaliation against Carl and Katia but protection for the dancers. He predicts that Astrid's replacement will restructure the damaged club, restore an earlier roster, and send the current crew back to the Meat Shields mercenary market on the Larracos level. He says that the workers do not normally belong in their favorable positions at the Penis Parade and that Astrid had pulled strings to place them there. Because Damascus persuaded the group to work at the club, he treats their survival as his responsibility. He warns Carl that without immediate removal they may be forced into service against the crawlers during Faction Wars.
Damascus knows that the dancers have retained their Meat Shields memberships and that Rosemarie operates an unlisted branch of the mercenary service from the club's top floor. He also knows that Donut has told him about Carl's 100,000-gold Meat Shields coupon. He brings Rosemarie into the negotiation, instructs her to approve a two-floor contract, and fixes the price at the exact value of the coupon. The proposed group includes the other dancers as well as Bucket Boy and Doctor Bones. Carl accepts the arrangement, transferring the endangered club workers into the Princess Posse's barracks and training facilities.
The evacuation is a plan Damascus constructs under immediate pressure. He identifies the administrative consequence of Astrid's death, locates a buyer with both space and a high-value coupon, and invokes the club's concealed mercenary office before management can disperse the crew. His approach does not free the performers from every obligation; it changes their contract and moves them into Carl's army for two floors. It nevertheless prevents the specific outcome Damascus fears and keeps most of the community together. His later absence from their Faction Wars unit is deliberate rather than an oversight in the transaction.
Damascus refuses to include himself in the contract. He tells Rosemarie that Carl is hiring all the others, not him, because he has a separate task. He also makes clear that he does not blame Carl or Katia for Astrid's death: they did not know the identity of the target, whereas Hamed did. According to Damascus, his parents remain married, their family had been promised freedom, and Hamed arranged matters so that Astrid would certainly die and her holdings would pass to him. The precise contract, inheritance, and promised release are not disclosed, but Damascus treats his father's conduct as intentional betrayal.
When Carl asks how Astrid can be his mother if he was never a crawler, Damascus says he has already received a warning to stop talking. He reveals only that he and Anaconda are two among thousands of people in a similar situation. Carl later theorizes that the family consists of natural people who have been trapped in dungeon roles for a long time, perhaps through indenture or coercive contracts, and that their different species reflect assigned bodies. He also infers that Astrid used her managerial authority and the hidden Meat Shields office to shelter her sons and their friends. These explanations remain Carl's interpretation; Damascus confirms the family relationships, the brothers' non-crawler status, and the existence of a much larger affected population, but not the complete origin Carl proposes.
Confrontation with Hamed
Damascus's stated purpose after saving the crew is to avenge Astrid. He tells Anaconda that Hamed will not win and prepares to enter the back cubicle leading toward the Guild. Anaconda immediately insists on accompanying him. When Dong Quixote volunteers as well, Anaconda refuses because the confrontation is family business. Damascus then helps his brother to his feet, and the two enter the hidden area together. Their choice separates them from the friends Damascus has just placed under Carl's protection.
By the beginning of the Ninth Floor, Hamed has become the new manager of the Desperado Club. Carl is told that Damascus and Anaconda are supposedly still somewhere inside, hunting their father. The club has also acquired heavier security under Hamed, including guards whom its concierge describes as neither ordinary NPCs nor exactly former crawlers. Nothing in the finalized novels establishes whether the brothers ever reach Hamed, fight him, negotiate with him, or become trapped by his new security structure.
During a later interval in Faction Wars, Donut sees Damascus pass an open doorway. She calls after him, but he disappears down the hall without answering. Carl does not witness the sighting and initially treats the brothers' mission as an unresolved problem. Donut interprets Damascus's avoidance personally because of her earlier affection for him, but the scene supplies no explanation for his conduct. It establishes only her identification of him and his survival after he and Anaconda entered the Guild area.
Near the end of the Ninth Floor, Dong Quixote, Splash Zone, Bucket Boy, and Doctor Bones search the club for Damascus and Anaconda. The new concierge and the surviving bouncer Clarabelle deny having seen either brother. Donut remains certain that Damascus did not leave after she spotted him. The search also reveals that the Penis Parade has reopened with an entirely new cast and that the former performers from the women's venue are missing, showing that the restructuring Damascus predicted has occurred even though he successfully removed much of his own crew beforehand.
Relationships and loyalties
Anaconda is Damascus's closest confirmed ally. They grieve together, are identified as brothers despite their different species, and choose the same dangerous family objective. Damascus initially plans to confront Hamed without asking Anaconda to follow, but he accepts his brother's decision and physically helps him up. Anaconda, in turn, excludes Dong Quixote so that the conflict remains within the family. Their continued disappearance is treated as a shared mystery rather than evidence that either brother abandoned the other.
Damascus's connection to the Penis Parade ensemble is defined by responsibility more than by his rank as assistant lead dancer. He says he convinced the performers to take their positions and refuses to leave them exposed to reassignment. Bucket Boy, Doctor Bones, and the dancers receive the protection Damascus arranges even though he gives up the chance to accompany them. Rosemarie's familiarity with his value in the mercenary market and her knowledge of Astrid's prior instructions also show that the protective arrangement predates the crisis, while Damascus is the person who adapts it after Astrid can no longer intervene.
His relationship with Carl combines secrecy, leverage, and trust. Damascus initially admits Carl to the Guild without explaining his family stake in its quest. After the consequences become clear, he tells Carl that a debt is owed and entrusts him with the lives of the other performers. He does not excuse the killing of Astrid, but he distinguishes the crawlers who were manipulated into carrying out the assignment from the father he believes designed it. Carl's acceptance of the mercenary contract fulfills the immediate request, though it does not resolve the larger family conflict.
Donut's attachment to Damascus is mostly comic and one-sided. She calls him “Steelie,” incorporates him into fantasies about Mongo, and assumes a degree of personal intimacy that Damascus never confirms. He speaks favorably of her when he meets Carl, and her knowledge of Carl's coupon becomes essential to the dancers' escape. His refusal to respond during her Ninth Floor sighting therefore affects her, but the text does not establish romance, rejection, or betrayal. As of This Inevitable Ruin, Damascus is alive at the time of Donut's sighting, missing by the floor's conclusion, and still connected to an unresolved struggle involving Hamed, Anaconda, and the restructured Desperado Club.
