Huanxin Jinx was a Grixist heiress, the chief executive officer of Icon Industries, and a long-standing competitor in the Celestial Ascendency. She exercised power inside Dungeon Crawler World by sponsoring and controlling deities rather than by entering as a crawler. During the events surrounding Carl, Princess Donut, and Katia Grim, she drove the goddess Eileithyia and attempted to turn Katia's crisis with the Crown of the Sepsis Whore into an advantage in the Ascendency.
Huanxin's offer gave Katia and Donut a possible escape from the Ninth Floor, but it was never an act of uncomplicated rescue. She made her assistance conditional on Carl secretly advancing her feud with Odette, threatened the people around him, and expected Katia to become a celestial attendant in Eileithyia's court. On the Ninth Floor, Donut used a flaw in the deity-sponsorship rules to pull Huanxin out of Eileithyia's soul armor. Donut then killed the now-exposed sponsor with a crossbow bolt prepared by Mordecai, ending both Huanxin's bargain and her attempt to acquire Katia.
Identity and position
Huanxin belonged to the Grixist Swarm. In her natural form she was a roughly human-sized, four-armed alien covered in coarse blue and black hair. Six black eyes formed a V across her insect-like face, and her long, narrow neck rose from a thin body with a distended abdomen. When she first appeared to Carl through Eileithyia, she allowed the crawlers to see this body instead of the goddess's soul armor. The sponsor interface identified her as the CEO of Icon Industries.
Mordecai described Icon Industries as a business connected to habitat structures, but Huanxin's personal fortune mattered more immediately than the company's precise field. He characterized her as wealthy enough to lend money to governments and intelligent enough to operate among the most powerful Ascendency competitors. Baroness Victory later stated that Huanxin had no living relatives known to her except a child clone. Huanxin was therefore not merely a celebrity participant in the crawl's divine game; she was an independently powerful off-world actor with corporate resources, political reach, and a cloned child.
She had played the Celestial Ascendency since childhood without ever taking its throne. The game offered something her wealth could not directly purchase: prestige and a ten-season seat on the crawl council. Mordecai said Huanxin had once been considered a spoiled child but had since become formidable in her own right. Her record nevertheless included a multi-season suspension for illegal bribery and a ban on using her former goddess. By Earth's season she had moved to Eileithyia, a goddess whose benevolent nature sharply contrasted with the coercive conduct of her sponsor.
The Dodola bargain and Mordecai's loss
Huanxin's history with Mordecai and Odette began during Mordecai's own crawl. On the Tenth Floor, Odette managed a four-crawler party consisting of Mordecai, his brother Uzzi, Chaco, and Hold Steady. The group had collected the components needed to open the stairwell, but its final puzzle required a storm god's magic while the floor was already collapsing. Odette's former party member Armita, then serving as a demigod attendant in the Ascendency, arranged for Huanxin to bring the sponsored storm goddess Dodola to the puzzle.
The arrangement was illegal. Odette stood to earn both freedom from her indentureship and a completion bonus if Mordecai reached the Eleventh Floor, while Huanxin was being offered part of that bonus to intervene. The plan also exploited limits on monitoring communications connected to Ascendency sponsors. Huanxin initially accepted ten percent of Odette's reward, then raised her price to one third. Once Dodola and the unsponsored storm god Adad arrived, Huanxin banished Adad, demanded half of the bonus, and threatened to eliminate the entire party if Odette refused.
Odette did refuse. Mordecai prepared to use Final Blow to redirect one of Dodola's attacks into the puzzle, even though the act would probably kill him. Odette instead ordered Chaco to worship Dodola and use the Dart of Ophiotaurus on Uzzi. The dart made Uzzi the vessel for a new summoning of Dodola; Chaco's containment spell trapped the goddess with the puzzle; and Dodola's own lightning destroyed both the objective and the deity. The tactic opened the stairwell, but Uzzi died in the summoning. Huanxin threatened to kill Odette and Armita after realizing she had been maneuvered into the trap.
The disaster created two overlapping vendettas. Huanxin regarded Odette's refusal and Dodola's death as injuries demanding revenge. Mordecai blamed Huanxin, Odette, and Chaco for Uzzi's death, with most of his anger directed at Huanxin. When Carl later asked why Mordecai had advised obeying her, Mordecai explained that the last person to refuse Huanxin had been his brother. His warning was not respect for her judgment; it was an assessment of how dangerous her retaliation could be.
Sponsorship of Eileithyia
Huanxin entered Carl's immediate story after Katia received an emergency sponsor box from Princess Formidable. The box contained a scroll that made Katia a worshipper of Eileithyia. Huanxin then contacted her through the goddess and revealed that Carl and Donut were approaching a confrontation connected to Yemaya's ruined shrine. If Katia persuaded them to restore it, Huanxin promised a boon capable of resolving the mortal conflict created by the Crown of the Sepsis Whore.
The repaired shrine returned Yemaya to the Halls. Yemaya was Eileithyia's friend and designated retainer, an unsponsored deity able to assist her once the Ascendency formally began. Huanxin's intervention therefore accomplished a concrete strategic goal before she offered meaningful help to the crawlers: Carl and Donut restored a second divine piece to her side of the Twelfth Floor contest. Mordecai recognized the exchange as characteristic of Huanxin. She identified Katia's emergency, placed a useful solution in reach, and made that solution advance her own position.
Huanxin appeared at the restored shrine in her Grixist body while driving Eileithyia. She granted Carl's party protection from spiritual possession, improved healing, and additional constitution. She also issued Carl a seemingly trivial quest to kill five spiders each day. The spiders were a cover. The quest created a private channel through which she could send deity messages and later grant another boon without requiring Carl to worship Eileithyia.
Through that channel, Huanxin told Carl that Odette would offer to become the Princess Posse's Faction Wars adjutant. She ordered him to accept. In return, she promised to obtain the votes needed to disable the protective rules that ordinarily kept faction armies from permanently dying, and she offered to solve the crown conflict threatening Katia and Donut. Her forecast that powerful interests would never permit crawlers to make the entire Ninth Floor safe proved accurate: Carl was eventually unable to obtain universal regeneration and instead created conditions under which the faction armies could kill their off-world owners.
The proposed alliance extended well beyond the immediate floor. Huanxin promised to keep Carl, Donut, and Katia alive until the Twelfth Floor, use them to help her claim the Celestial Throne, and arrange a favorable exit afterward. Those promises came with explicit threats. Carl was forbidden to disclose the bargain to Donut, Mordecai, Odette, or anyone else. Huanxin warned that betrayal would bring reprisals against everyone he loved, beginning with Katia and Donut. She presented herself as both a permanent ally and an implacable enemy, leaving Carl no safe way to test which side of that distinction he occupied.
Katia's proposed escape
The center of Huanxin's bargain was the Orchid of Eileithyia's Grace. When consumed, it would place Katia in a vulnerable suspended state and offer three possible boons: a vast increase to her constitution, a pregnancy that would make her ineligible for the crawl, or transfer to the Twelfth Floor as a celestial attendant. Huanxin wanted the third result. Moving Katia into Eileithyia's court would remove her from the Ninth Floor, satisfy the Crown of the Sepsis Whore's condition separating her from Donut, and give Huanxin a powerful former crawler for the Ascendency.
Katia initially preferred the attendant option to pregnancy. She no longer wanted to leave the dungeon carrying a child into an uncertain situation on Earth's surface, and Huanxin promised protection in Eileithyia's court. The proposal nevertheless required complete trust in someone who had already threatened the group. Carl understood that Huanxin's goals were to win the Ascendency and take revenge on Odette, not simply to save Katia. That distinction became more dangerous once Odette entered the Ascendency as the sponsor of Nekhebit, placing Katia between two enemies if she joined Huanxin's court.
The adjutant portion of the bargain failed when Odette did not ask for the position as Huanxin had predicted. Huanxin accepted responsibility for that error and told Carl she would still honor the agreement. Even this concession was paired with another threat: if she learned that Carl had warned Odette, she would destroy Katia, Donut, and everyone else close to him. The completed spider quest closed their private channel, but the promised escape through Eileithyia remained in force.
During Faction Wars, Huanxin stayed on the Twelfth Floor and continued to drive Eileithyia. The party proceeded on the assumption that she remained their only established way to get both Katia and Donut off the Ninth Floor. Katia even told Carl that, in a worst-case scenario, she believed Huanxin would accept Donut in her place. None of them regarded the arrangement as secure. Donut correctly understood that Huanxin cared about obtaining Katia and might be indifferent to whether the rest of the party survived the transfer.
Death on the Ninth Floor
Katia finally consumed the orchid minutes before the Ninth Floor's destruction. Eileithyia appeared inside the Princess Posse stronghold with Huanxin controlling her. Unlike the cemetery appearance, the soul armor displayed Eileithyia's own form. Huanxin immediately ordered Katia to choose a boon and prepare to leave, while complaining about the upheaval already underway on the Twelfth Floor. Her exchange with Victory also showed that she had major investments in mantis-controlled territory, although she dismissed a report that one colony system's star had gone nova and asserted that her holdings were insured.
Donut delayed the selection and cast Laundry Day, which forcibly removed Huanxin from Eileithyia's soul armor. Carl's party had prepared a circle of words of power at the place where she landed. It prevented Huanxin from teleporting away and suppressed her magic, although her technological shields initially remained active. The removal also exposed a rules interaction: because Katia had not yet confirmed a boon, Eileithyia remained motionless and unaware of the attack while her sponsor stood outside the divine armor.
Huanxin attempted to command Eileithyia and threatened Carl and Donut, but the goddess could not respond. Donut, amplified by Eileithyia's own combat boon, used Claw to tear down Huanxin's shields. Mordecai then entered carrying a mundane crossbow bolt whose tip incorporated some of his mother's ashes, following a funerary practice of his people. He could not attack Huanxin directly because his manager status made him a non-combatant NPC, so he loaded the bolt into Donut's crossbow and left after saying goodbye to Katia.
Huanxin argued that she had offered a solution to a crisis the crawlers had created. Donut rejected that description, distinguishing between saving Katia and exploiting her need. She fired Mordecai's bolt between Huanxin's eyes, killing the CEO inside the trap. The act remained within the dungeon's rules even though Victory expected political consequences for having allowed another chief executive to be murdered.
Huanxin's death did not remove Eileithyia or cancel Katia's choice. Once Katia selected a boon, the goddess resumed moving without realizing that her sponsor had been killed. Katia rejected the celestial-attendant future Huanxin had designed and instead chose pregnancy so she could leave the crawl and help the children held in the kinder facility. Eileithyia accepted that choice independently, restored Katia's human form, and made her ineligible. Huanxin's scheme therefore achieved the promised separation of Katia and Donut, but it failed at its central objective: Katia escaped without entering Huanxin's court, while the sponsor herself never reached the formal Ascendency contest she had spent the season preparing to win.
Methods and limitations
Huanxin's most important abilities came from sponsorship. While driving a deity she could wear its soul armor or appear in her natural body, employ divine powers available through that deity, communicate through protected channels, issue quests and boons, and exploit temple rules that exceeded ordinary dungeon authority. Through Dodola she could enchant rain with healing, creatures, or other magical effects. Through Eileithyia she supplied defensive boons and controlled access to the orchid's potentially life-changing outcomes.
Those powers depended on systems with exploitable boundaries. Huanxin could be pulled out of soul armor; her personal protections combined technology and magic that could be countered separately; and the sponsored goddess became immobilized while a required choice remained unresolved. Outside Eileithyia's armor, Huanxin was neither invulnerable nor an untouchable deity. Her death demonstrated the weakness beneath her usual strategy: she relied on wealth, divine proxies, secrecy, and leverage to place others in constrained choices, but she was physically vulnerable once Carl's party forced her to participate on their terms.
