Louis Santiago 2 is an Earth crawler, cloud-magic specialist, and military pilot allied with the Princess Posse. He enters the story on the Fifth Floor as an underleveled Pest Exterminator who has survived largely by incapacitating enemies and fleeing with his friend Firas. Over the following floors, Louis becomes a dependable member of the crawler coalition, learns to operate dungeon aircraft, receives the unique rank of Army Air General, and commands the light bomber Party Planner during Faction Wars.
Louis's apparent unseriousness persists even after he accepts greater responsibility. He uses pop-culture references to interpret unfamiliar dungeon mechanics, makes jokes in dangerous situations, and remains notably less formal than the commanders around him. That manner initially conceals fear, inexperience, and a reliance on alcohol. Later, it coexists with a willingness to perform dangerous missions, protect other crawlers, and accept personal consequences that he believes will spare his companions.
Entry into the dungeon and survival with Firas
Louis is a twenty-seven-year-old American from Miami. At the moment of the collapse, he is driving a Chevrolet Astro van near Interstate 95 after leaving his friend Jojo's home. The van survives because its roof has been removed, but the damaged roadway sends it sliding down a stairwell and into the dungeon. Louis later says that he was heavily intoxicated and did not understand what was happening until the vehicle had already crashed through the entrance.
The unusual arrival earns him the enhanced, legendary-tier spell Cloud of Exhaust. The spell releases black smoke with a high probability of rendering groups of enemies unconscious. Affected targets awaken when struck, but remain vulnerable to increased damage for a short period. Louis's Pest Control class improves cloud-based magic and reduces the spell's normally long cooldown to ten minutes. By repeatedly using Cloud of Exhaust, Louis and Firas avoid many direct fights on the early floors. Firas's Puddle Jumper spell provides their escape when avoidance alone is insufficient.
That strategy keeps the pair alive but leaves them poorly prepared for later challenges. They often abandon incapacitated enemies instead of using the spell's damage-enhancing aftermath to secure kills and experience. By the time they reach Hump Town on the Fifth Floor, both men are only level 22. Mordecai concludes that Louis should have been substantially stronger and that the same ability which protected him in the early dungeon has enabled him to postpone learning how to fight.
Hump Town and forced sobriety
Carl, Princess Donut, and Katia Grim first find Louis and Firas drinking in the Spit and Swallow. Louis is accompanied by the changeling Juice Box, who entertains the pair by assuming the appearances of fictional and famous women. Louis recognizes Carl but responds defensively when asked to join the other crawlers' planning. Donut pressures both men into attending, judging that their low levels make survival outside the settlement unlikely.
Their intoxication worsens before the meeting. Mordecai prepares disguised treatment potions which abruptly sober them, induce violent vomiting, and permanently prevent them from becoming drunk through ordinary means. Louis treats the loss of alcohol as the removal of the only comfort he has left. The intervention is coercive, but it also changes his place within the group: once sober, he can understand plans, take assignments, and use Cloud of Exhaust in coordination with stronger combatants.
His first operation with Carl's party is an infiltration of Hump Town's municipal building. Louis knocks out two disguised changeling guards, allowing the group to discover the prisoners and conspiracy inside. The guards recover much faster than Louis expects because of the level difference, and he and Firas have to help finish one while Donut supplies the decisive attack. Louis gains two levels during the encounter. The raid nearly kills him when the building's defenders fire an explosive through the barricaded door, leaving him burned and wounded by shrapnel, but he helps Firas escape after Donut opens a route out.
Louis subsequently drives the Royal Chariot during the crawlers' deception of the dirigible gnomes. Carl places him in charge of the vehicle and assigns him to provide ground support against the gnomish escort craft. Louis and Firas join the coordinated missile ambush, then recover and secure a surviving gnomish aircraft. These assignments begin his progression from an evasive spellcaster into the group's vehicle specialist.
The Twister and the changeling evacuation
Louis's aptitude becomes most visible when the crawler coalition gains control of a floating house later named the Twister. While Carl and Donut are temporarily absent from the Fifth Floor, Louis and Firas learn its elevation controls and use air currents to steer it. They also work with Katia to make the damaged structure usable: Louis proposes storing the entire floating house in Katia's inventory, and the group removes part of the building so its stairwell no longer prevents movement between regions.
The two men become skilled enough that Katia describes them as pilots rather than passengers. They transport crawlers between the separated regions, move above the storm system, and support operations around the remaining castles. During the Orthrus crisis, Louis and Firas fly through violent crosswinds while Donut attempts to keep the enormous dog alive. Louis repairs the balloon's failing net and warns that the house will fall if they cannot land. His attention to the aircraft's condition becomes as important as his spellcasting.
Louis also assists the evacuation of Hump Town's changelings. He helps ferry the survivors through the lacuna to another bubble, where the Gate of the Feral Gods can send them to the Sixth Floor. The Twister carries as many as it can, while changelings in bird form glide beside it. Louis and Firas then remain behind rather than attempting to follow through the portal, because crawlers must use the regular stairwell. His concern after the transfer is both practical and personal: he worries that the changeling children will damage the aircraft before he can recover it.
The evacuation strengthens his relationship with Juice Box. Louis has already told her that her world is an artificial setting whose inhabitants are repeatedly used by the dungeon. That disclosure helps awaken her to the nature of the crawl, even though it also deprives her of the belief that Hump Town can simply rebuild. Before she leaves for Larracos, Juice Box tells Carl and Donut that she and Louis intend to marry.
The Hunting Grounds and the loss of Firas
On the Sixth Floor, Louis advances to level 35 and changes from Pest Exterminator to Extermination Professional. The new class grants a small instant-kill chance against enemies at or below his level. Cloud of Exhaust remains his defining combat tool, while his growing familiarity with aircraft makes him and Firas responsible for operating the Twister during hunter attacks and settlement assaults.
Louis also becomes a personal target of the Dream. On the Fifth Floor, he had taken a photograph of Epitome Noflex and asked Juice Box to imitate her. Noflex's son, Epitome Tagg, regards the act as an attack on his mother's honor and orders Dream hunters to find Louis. Louis initially dismisses the threat as an overreaction, but Katia later discovers him crying when he believes he is alone. He fears both the hunters and the possibility that his companions will expel him for attracting them.
Katia deliberately gives him room to develop confidence. Louis experiments with throwing equipment onto her mutable body so that armor will equip itself automatically, an idea that has tactical potential even though the early version could crush her if it lands incorrectly. He also notices the small passage system inside the high-elven castle and correctly concludes that it was built for the queen's cat. The observation gives the crawlers a possible covert route toward the security room during the Butcher's Masquerade.
During the party, Louis helps coordinate the Twister from inside the ballroom. When hostile mantises seize the aircraft and the changeling passengers abandon it, Sledge retakes its controller but cannot safely preserve the ship. Louis protests when Sledge proposes crashing it into the castle's defenses, then accepts Carl's decision and watches the vehicle he helped master be destroyed.
The battle's larger loss is Firas. Louis is burned and rendered unconscious during the final fighting; when he wakes, Firas is dead. The death ends the partnership that carried both men through the early dungeon. On the Eighth Floor, Carl notices a hollowness beneath Louis's familiar behavior. Louis remains close to Katia's squad and watches over Britney, whose own injuries and grief have changed her behavior, but he is no longer buffered by the friend who shared his entire crawl.
The Eighth Floor and the player-killer burden
Louis continues using Cloud of Exhaust in the Eighth Floor's memory environments, at one point killing roughly two hundred low-level Lads and supplying Katia's group with a large collection of dropped cards. He also begins appearing on outside programs, including Dungeon Sidekicks with Britney. The attention does not make him a senior strategist, but it shows that the formerly anonymous crawler has become recognizable beyond his immediate alliance.
His response to the floor's psychological pressure is most clearly shown in the Christmas gathering he organizes. Louis collects decorations from the simulations, recruits changeling children to decorate the safe area, finds candy for their presents, and plays music for the assembled crawlers. Carl initially considers the celebration inappropriate while crawler squads are dying. Louis answers that this is precisely why it matters: Firas is dead, Britney and Tran are suffering, Katia and Bautista are near collapse, and he fears Carl is becoming unstable. The party is not denial of the danger but Louis's attempt to create one good memory before the next crisis.
Later combat gives him five player-killer skulls in a single attack. Louis is deeply disturbed by the kills, but when the group must execute the unconscious Sister Ines to release a captured demon, he volunteers. He argues that the others should delay acquiring skulls as long as possible because he already bears them. Killing Ines marks him for death by her patron goddess Ysalte. Louis flees while the others occupy the deity and survives the pursuit, receiving a Celestial box for outliving a goddess who has marked him. After the battle, he carries an unconscious Carl through the burning city.
Army Air General and marriage
Louis opens the Celestial box on the Ninth Floor. It contains an Airship Portal guild upgrade and a tilt-rotor stealth light bomber classified as a Casket in the Sky. The system designates him Army Air General Louis Santiago 2, assigns the aircraft to the Princess Posse, and recognizes him as its owner. He names the bomber Party Planner, reviving a name Firas had once suggested for the Twister. The choice turns the new aircraft into a memorial as well as a weapon.
The Party Planner can be flown by Louis alone, though it has positions for a co-pilot, navigator, bombardier, tail gunner, and ball-turret gunner. Its protections include Louis's Protect Aircraft shield, an anti-flak shield, and stealth systems. The accompanying portal allows designated guild safe rooms to act as airports and dimensional hangars, where the ship can be repaired and upgraded. Louis hires gremlin mechanics and adds door guns before full hostilities begin.
Louis reunites with Juice Box in Larracos and agrees to marry her. Juice Box presents the union as a way to strengthen the bond between the crawler and dungeon-born factions, but Louis also recognizes the fear behind her confident public manner. They complete the small wedding used in changeling custom, a legal first-stage marriage with a month-long period in which either spouse may file pre-signed divorce papers before a larger Confirmation ceremony. Louis leaves his new wife almost immediately to fly the Party Planner to the Princess Posse's base.
Faction Wars
During the opening fighting, Louis's first major bombing run supports an assault on enemy trenches. Instead of striking the reinforced positions directly, he drops Carl's bombs in a line before them. The explosions excavate a new trench, bury defenders in dirt, and clear traps and protective enhancements from the approach. Although hostile spells strike the aircraft, its shields hold and Louis completes the run.
The Party Planner then becomes a mobile platform for several operations. Louis carries specially constructed bombs, transports Carl and other specialists between fronts, and coordinates with ground commanders and anti-air units. He uses cloud magic from the aircraft as well, filling the approaches to a naga position with poisonous vapor to deter movement. The role places him in danger whenever a plan requires fast support across separate theaters, but Carl increasingly treats him as an operational commander rather than the frightened crawler first encountered in Hump Town.
Near the end of Faction Wars, Louis flies toward the Reaver castle while a bleached drake circles above it. The dragon's gravity magic tears the Party Planner in half despite Louis's missiles and evasive attempt. He drops the unarmed bombs to prevent them from detonating, activates feather fall, and descends into the castle. His door gunners appear to die in the crash. Louis is then trapped inside the Reaver complex, where the faction begins replacing his vital organs as part of an attempted transfer of Epitome Tagg into his body.
Rescue, transplant, and final confirmed status
Juice Box enters the castle in a hunter-wraith form and possesses Louis long enough to move his body, use his inventory, and activate a teleport. Once outside, examination shows that the Reavers have installed mechanical lungs and a heart containing biological material from Tagg. Tagg is not the wraith possessing Louis; Juice Box is the wraith rescuer, while Tagg has been grafted into the replacement organs. He can stop them and kill Louis if the allies try to remove him carelessly.
Samantha identifies a replacement: the heart and pulmonary system in Princess Lunette's unused flesh-golem body. Mordecai, Edgar, Imani, Rosetta, Juice Box, and the other healers conduct an emergency transplant while Carl and Tipid hold Louis's chest open. The borrowed lungs do not fit ordinary human anatomy, so the team adapts a rebreather and makes magically created gills permanent. Louis awakens after the graft, breathing through the new system. Mongo destroys the removed mechanical organs, killing Tagg and defeating the Dream faction.
Juice Box's hunter-wraith curse has revealed that Louis is afraid of her and doubts whether her affection is genuine. She gives him the prepared divorce papers before leaving the Ninth Floor. Louis is hurt by the separation but refuses to enter the stairwell until he has said goodbye to Katia. When Eileithyia restores Katia's humanity and requires a human father for her pregnancy, Katia asks Louis. The goddess confirms that his altered body has not changed his humanity, and Louis agrees.
Louis's last confirmed status in the completed novels is alive at the end of the Ninth Floor. He retains his cloud magic, Army Air General rank, and newly transplanted organs, although the Party Planner has been destroyed. He enters the stairwell with the surviving crawler coalition. Events after that transition are not established here.
